    The Friends of the NRA will be hosting a banquet in Wrangell this Saturday, beginning at 5 p.m., at the Nolan Center. This has been a highly attended event in previous years, with many Wrangell residents coming out for good food, auctions, and the opportunity to buy or win new guns.     The Wrangell School Board, still getting settled with new members from the election on Oct. 2, held a work session on the evening of Oct. 28 to begin a review of the district's strategic plan. The strategic plan was adopted in June of 2018, and sets a series of goals for the school district to aim for through to the year 2023.     Wrangell was one of seven teams to participate in the Haines Invitational this past weekend. It was a hard week for them, according to Assistant Coach Jack Carney. He was very proud of the team’s performance, he said, but the trip took some of the energy out of them. As a team, Wrangell made 106 points and took third place.     The Lady Wolves volleyball team travelled to Skagway for their most recent tournament of the season. The team had games scheduled against Haines, Skagway, Klawock, Craig, Metlakatla, and Petersburg. The team saw several wins this tournament, and while they suffered a few losses, they ended on a high note. Wrangell’s first two games were against Haines and Skagway on Friday, Oct. 25.     Wrangell was host to the Tom Sims Invitational wrestling tournament this past weekend. Teams from all over Southeast Alaska, 11 in total, came together to officially kick off the high school wrestling season.     The Wrangell Convention and Visitor Bureau met last Thursday, Oct. 17, to look over their updated budget and to start planning for future meetings and conventions.   • Donna McKay recognized for three decades of service at Head Start

    Donna McKay, assistant teacher at Head Start in Wrangell, was recently recognized for hitting the 30-year mark in her career. She was given a plaque last Monday, Oct. 14, in Fairbanks during an award ceremony. Head Start is an early childhood program that, according to their website, serves children from birth to five-years-old in 100 Alaskan communities.     The Baha'i faith will be recognizing the 200th anniversary of the birth of their founder this month. According to the Baha'i's website, Siyyid 'Alí-Muhammad was born in Iran on Oct. 20, 1819.     Kicking off last Monday, Oct. 7, Evergreen Elementary School has begun a Read-A-Thon to see if their student body can spend a total of 80,000 minutes reading.     The Wrangell High School swim team competed in the Ketchikan Invitational Swim Meet this past weekend, Oct. 4 and 5.     Monday, Oct. 7, members of the Forest Service and high school oceanography students, boated over to the east side of Wrangell, near Channel Island, to retrieve the remains of a gray whale that washed up back in June. The whale, a 30-foot male, was one of the victims in a UME, or "unusual mortality event" that has seen numerous gray whales die.
