    Friday afternoon an excavator fell into a trench on Front Street located between the Sentinel office and the Kadin building. The incident occurred shortly before 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 9. The trench, approximately six-feet-deep, had been dug to install a new water line as part of Wrangell’s road and utility improvement project. The fall crushed the cab of the 320 excavator.     Rep. Don Young was in Wrangell Monday as part of a Southeast Alaska tour this week for the state’s sole U.S. congressman. During his quick visit, Young met with community members and business representatives at the Nolan Center for lunch where he heard about a number of issues facing Wrangell as well as local economic development projects.     The construction company operating at the medical campus will be allowed to begin working as early as 8 a.m. on Saturdays. The Wrangell Planning and Zoning (P&Z) Commission approved the extra weekend work hours at its meeting March 8, after receiving an application for a noise variance from Ketchikan Ready Mix and Quarry Inc.     To the Editor: I am very concerned and I’m sure others are to about what the Hospital Board is doing in keeping Dr. Salard from seeing his patients in the hospital. My father and mother are both in the Wrangell Hospital and bed ridden. Dr. Salard is their doctor and he is my doctor. We don’t want to see anyone else since there is never the same doctor twice in a row that knows my history and theirs. Dr. Salard is one of the reasons my father is alive today.     Mike Carney, 76, died January 27, 2012. Mike was born in LaConner, Wash. on June 21, 1935 and moved soon after to Kittitas, Wash. where he was raised with six brothers and three sisters on a farm. Mike married Helen in June of 1957. He moved with his family to Alaska, starting in Metlakatla in 1960 and then to Wrangell in 1971. Mike worked as a millwright and a sawyer, later becoming a foreman.     SITKA, Alaska (AP) — The Department of Fish and Game says aerial surveys will begin Tuesday in preparation for the first opening of the Sitka Sound sac roe herring fishery. Area management biologist Dave Gordon tells the Daily Sitka Sentinel that the guideline harvest level of 28,829 tons is based on a forecast biomass of 144,143 tons.     Local physician Greg Salard has filed an appeal in Alaska trial court concerning the Wrangell Medical Center (WMC) Board of Director’s decision not to grant him privileges to work at the hospital.
