  • The Way We Were In the Sentinel

    Jul 12, 2018

July 11, 1918 It was a safe and sane Fourth - and a dry one. Everyone had a good time. Money was not scarce: Witness the generous prizes and elaborate decorations. If a few sighed for the days that used to be, the vast majority appreciated the good order and the fact that one was spared, this year, the sights that frequently marred celebrations in the past. In connection with the exercise held in the Redmen’s hall the morning of the Fourth, did you happen to notice the exceptionally fine programs? A great deal of time and thought and care w...

  • Driver reportedly intoxicated in fatal accident

    Dan Rudy|Jul 12, 2018

Laboratory results from a fatal car accident last month indicate the driver had been under the influence of alcohol prior to the crash. Rainie Doak had been driving home with her three children on Zimovia Highway late the evening of June 10 when she lost control of the vehicle prior to crossing the Pats Creek Bridge, about 12 miles south of Wrangell. The sports utility vehicle avoided hitting the guard rail but ran into the creek, upturning in the process and discharging the occupants. Doak and one of the children had been killed at the scene,...

  • Ferry troubles strike summer schedule

    Dan Rudy|Jul 12, 2018

Technical trouble with the state ferry system has put a crimp on interisland travel recently. The M/V Columbia – one of two vessels making the north-south run each week in Southeast Alaska – had a longer than expected stop into Bellingham, Washington after arriving June 29. Crew members discovered black smoke in the ship's bow thruster room, prompting use of a fixed carbon dioxide fire fighting system and evacuation of the vessel. No fire had been evident, and all passengers aboard were rep...

  • Alaska Fish Factor

    Laine Welch|Jul 12, 2018

Sockeye salmon catches often add up to half of the value of Alaska’s total salmon fishery, and the so-called reds dominate the season’s early fisheries starting in mid-May. But sockeye catches so far range from record-setting highs at Bristol Bay to record lows nearly everywhere else. For example, the Copper River sockeye harvest of just 26,000 is the lowest in 50 years. At Kodiak just 212,000 sockeyes were taken through July 6 making it the weakest harvest in 38 years. Sockeye fishing at Yakutat has been closed due to the lowest returns in...
