Alaska Region. The Chugach was part of a ranger boat fleet that once numbered 11 strong, and worked along 12,000 miles of Alaska coastline. By 2005, the majority of the other ranger boats were in private ownership. The Chugach is 62-feet long and she's just over 14-feet wide. It is listed on the National Historic Register of Places, and in conjunction with the National Historic Preservation Act the agency is required to take certain steps to ask the public what could be done with the vessel....
PETERSBURG – When a person is rowing a freshly licensed, hand-constructed 16-foot boat from Washington to Juneau, bad days are bound to happen. One happened right before Blake Miller of Missoula, Montana, rowed into North Harbor early one morning last week. After being about 3/16 inch on his map, he ended up on a massive mud flat. So his options were, get up at 1 a.m. and be on the water by 2 a.m., or roll the boat over a couple hundred yards of rock and mud. He also had the option of waiting u...

August 15, 1941: Throughout the joint efforts of a group of merchants along Front Street, the dust along the main thoroughfare was laid this week. The businessmen bought some diesel oil, got permission from the city to lay the oil and borrowed the city truck for the job. Manager J.R. Brown of the Coliseum Theater promoted the idea; then got aboard and drove the truck while Street Superintendent H.R. Coulter and Police Chief Chet Lloyd tended the oil sprinkler. The business group plans to go before the city council at its next meeting with the...

To the Editor: I think it’s highly unfair to allow boys to compete with girls in most physical competitions. Even in the Olympics men and women are separated in events because, for the most part, men will be stronger and faster. They are built differently. Regardless of how this boy feels, he still has male parts, and the strength and speed of a male, thus giving him an advantage. Put this same boy in the male event and I can guarantee that he would not have placed third especially if two females beat him. Rebecca Christensen To the Editor: Wra...
JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) – An Alaska whale-watching cruise turned into a rescue mission for an unusual aquatic species a distressed, swimming deer. The 18-passenger tour vessel from Gastineau Guiding Co. lassoed the struggling deer on Wednesday, pulled it on board and gave it a ride to an island, Juneau radio station KTOO reported. Naturalist Audrey Benson said visitors and crew were watching whales when the boat received a radio transmission that deer were swimming in the saltwater on the west side of Shelter Island. “We heard that there were two...
Who knows more about local salmon and their habitats than Alaska fishermen? That’s the impetus behind a new information-gathering project spawned by United Fishermen of Alaska (UFA) that aims to provide useful and timely news about the health of the state’s salmon runs. The Salmon Habitat Information Program (SHIP) launched last week with an online survey to provide commercial fishermen with a way to share their local intelligence. “We are asking people what issues they are most concerned about in their region,” said SHIP manager Lindsey...
