If you were in Wrangell in August 1982, think back to that moment for just a second. Ronald Reagan was president, gasoline came in at just above $1.50 a gallon, and a gallon of milk would cost a Wrangellite a little more than $2.50. And if you were in Wrangell on Aug. 5, 1982, you were also witness to the grand opening of a business that stands proudly in downtown to this day. J&W’s Fast Food, which currently calls 120 Front Street home, began as a handbuilt drive thru restaurant located at the...

To the Editor: Wrangell has recently gone through a major change of the WMC board of directors and our CEO was fired. I had a short opportunity to see him while he was moving his things out of his office. He seemed very depressed; I can’t blame him he has a family to care for and no means to provide now. It’s not over yet, why can’t it just stop. It seems now our care providers are getting it. In the past few years I’ve gone through some major medical issues. Some very professional medical providers have seen me. I try to ask all the questio...

In a memorandum attached to a motion to deny Salard and his attorney, Lee Holen of Anchorage, an extension of time to file a reply brief in the case, WMC attorney Steven Rose said Salard’s request was not valid. “A renewed application for privile...
Alaska has more coastline than all of the other US states combined, but unlike all those other states, Alaskans have no say in how their coasts are managed or developed. If Outside and foreign corporations have their way, that’s how it will remain. A successful coastal zone management program has been in place since the 1970s, but the program expired last year when lawmakers and Governor Parnell failed to agree on its extension. Despite constant criticism of “the feds” always trying to butt into Alaska’s business, the state surrendered authori...

The vessel was reported at the time to have had as much as 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel aboard. According to witnesses on board, the vessel capsized while pulling...
