    Over 150 years ago, on Oct. 18, 1867, the territory of Alaska was transferred from Russia to the United States of America. Today, Oct. 18 is commemorated across the state as “Alaska Day.” Southeast Beasts, a Wrangell running group, has organized an Alaska Day fun run on Oct. 20 to commemorate the holiday and to raise funds for the Wrangell Mariner’s Memorial.   • Almost $4,000 offered for killer of illegal moose on Nemo Loop Road

    A young moose was found dead on Nemo Loop Road on Sept. 25. According to Sgt. Robert Welch, with the Alaska State Troopers, the moose was shot and killed one to two days before its discovery at about mile 4.5 of the road. The moose was not legal to kill, he said, and they are searching for the shooter. Further information could not be made available to the public, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to their website, WISH is a Ketchikan-based nonprofit that works to "provide a safe place for victims, assist them as they explore the alternatives available to them, and support the choices they make as they strive to gain control of their lives."     The Wrangell Wolves school wrestling team recently competed in their first tournament of the season at Petersburg High School Oct. 12 and 13. Wrangell came in third place behind Ketchikan High School and Mt. Edgecumbe High School. Assistant Coach Jack Carney said he was very proud of the team's performance.     Wrangell high school’s volleyball team played in Juneau against various 3A and 4A high schools last weekend. All the participating teams were divided into two brackets, gold and silver. Wrangell took second place in the silver bracket.     The Wrangell High School swim team competed in Ketchikan last weekend against six other high schools. Coach Jamie Roberts said that she was very proud of her team’s performance. Over the two-day competition, Roberts said that many members of her team achieved personal best times.
