  • Board approves Rhodes's resignation

    Brian O Connor|Dec 19, 2013

Sentinel writer Wrangell Public Schools Superintendent Rich Rhodes will resign effective June 30. The board voted 4-0 to accept a letter of resignation dated Dec. 16. Rhodes said the primary reason he's resigning is to return to northern California, where he lived before taking on the position of superintendent – and later the position of Evergreen Elementary School principal as part of budget constraints – in 2010. Rhodes opted for a resignation and not a retirement because he's relatively you...

Two concerts and an art auction showcased the talents of local youth this week. Student musicians from Stikine Middle School and Wrangell High School participated in the joint high school and middle school concert Dec. 11 in the high school commons. Elementary school students sang and performed at the elementary school concert Dec. 12 in the elementary school gym. The older students' concert also included – for the first time ever – an auction of dozens of objets d'art produced by students and...

  • Parnell budget blanks Wrangell capital

    Brian O Connor|Dec 19, 2013

Gov. Sean Parnell’s proposed 2015 budget does not include any capital money for Wrangell projects. The budget, released last Thursday, allots $2,360,655 for capital projects in the other constituent municipalities of what will become state House District 36 after a court-approved redistricting takes effect before mid-term elections this year, according to figures released on the Alaska Office of Management and Budget website. The Alaska legislature could revise the budget before it is enacted, though State Sen. Bert Stedman (R-Sitka) said t...

  • The Way We Were

    Dec 19, 2013

In the Sentinel 100, 75, 50 and 25 years ago. December 25, 1913: In coming from Hollis yesterday in a 32-foot gas boat, Harry Webber and Angus MacKinzie met with one of those little incidents that remind me of the fact that he is ever a victim at the mercy of fate. In the Tongass Narrows, about eight miles from Ketchikan their propeller shaft broke, and they coaxed that 30 foot boat to town with a piece of shiplab and a barrel stave… Frank Morikawa of the Panama Café is building a great big three story wedding cake for one of the Wrangell bo...

    Brian O Connor|Dec 19, 2013

The Alaskan Native Sisterhood and Brotherhood hosted their annual Christmas party at the Stikine Native Organization building last Saturday afternoon. Each child got a bag of popcorn and a stocking filled with goodies. Mark Gunderson provided oranges. This year marked the first party held...

  • The Christmas Shoe Box

    Dec 19, 2013

Excitement was high that day as we prepared our first Christmas program for the indigenous tribe we had been sent to evangelize. They knew that the lowlanders celebrated Christmas by giving gifts and partying, but they had no idea why. This was our perfect opportunity to share the Christmas story with them. We had learned that if we wanted to get a large turnout all we had to do was announce by word of mouth that we would be providing a feast or gifts to all that came and natives would come out of nowhere. This afternoon’s program would be a...

  • Letters to the Editor

    Dec 19, 2013

To the Editor: I think the recent cutting of trees on the Volunteer Park nature trail, apparently just to take the tops for Christmas trees, deserves some consideration. This is a heavily used recreational walk, with interpretive signs and doggy bag dispensers, not a remote area. There has been considerable effort and money put into developing this trail, with gravel path and benches. Obviously all who go there do so by choice, to enjoy the natural beauty, and get out for a little exercise. Footprints in the snow reveal many users come here eac...

  • Rooney takes 5th at state wrestling tourney

    Brian O Connor|Dec 19, 2013

Early defeats resulted in a somewhat disappointing finish for the Wolves. At last weekend’s state meet in Anchorage, Jeffrey Rooney, Jr. secured a fifth-place finish. Rooney was the only wrestler to place, and the five Wolves wrestlers ended up in 22nd place overall among 49 teams represented. “We lost a couple early matches and that really didn’t help our cause,” said head coach Jeffrey Rooney, Sr. “It was a really tough competition, obviously. We didn’t perform quite as well as I thought we were gonna.” Seeding may have contributed t...

  • Lady Wolves head into season with new coach

    Brian O Connor|Dec 19, 2013

First-year girls basketball head coach Edna Abella-Nore has high expectations for the upcoming season unrelated to the team record. "My expectations for the season ... the biggest one is that every one of them work really hard," she said. "That's the most important thing. If they come to practice every day and work 110 percent and apply that not only in practice but also during games, I think it's going to be very successful." The uncertainty about where the Lady Wolves will stand at the end of...

  • Fish Factor

    Laine Welch|Dec 19, 2013

It’s traditional during the Christmas season to decorate a downtown with lights – for Kodiak and other coastal communities “downtown” means the boat harbor. This month, alongside the local businesses on shore, Kodiak’s floating storefronts will be showcased in the downtown lighting festivities – meaning the 650 or so fishing businesses that each support one or several Kodiak families. Think of it as a mall in a marina! The revamped Harbor Lights Festival is an old theme with a new twist, said Toby Sullivan, director of the Kodiak Maritime Mu...

The department uses an age structured analysis (ASA) model which uses a long time series of abundance and age composition data from department surveys conducted during and following the spring fishery. Herring abundance is estimated using aerial surveys designed to map the length of shoreline receiving sp...

  • Lots of unknowns for Wolves' season

    Brian O Connor|Dec 19, 2013

The high school basketball team hopes to be competitive for the Region V tournament March 5 to March 8. Nine weekends of conference play and an invitational tournament in Ketchikan stand between them and the season's end, as well as a relatively untested squad, said head coach Ray Stokes. "Our goal for the season: To get better every game, and hopefully come tournament time we'd like to be competitive and in the hunt for the regional tournament," he said. "We're a very young team. I don't know...

  • New boat seeks safer fishing on deadly Bering Sea

    Dec 19, 2013

ANACORTES, Wash. (AP) — Few professions are as deadly as commercial fishing on the Bering Sea. Crews face rogue waves and frigid gales that toss around heavy machines and cause vessels to pitch, yaw and roll on turbulent waters. The dangers are so constant that they’ve been made lore on the long-running cable show “Deadliest Catch.’’ Over the years, efforts to keep crew members safe have taken many forms, from changing the culture among fishermen to equipping them with emergency gear such as survival suits that can help them survive the icy w...

  • Wrangell students collect Shakes Glacier survey data

    Brian O Connor|Dec 19, 2013

While Wrangell High School students involved in monitoring the Shakes Glacier may have been iced out this year, the program has plans for the data they have collected. Local high school students have participated in using survey equipment to monitor the glaciers in Petersburg and Wrangell for years. Petersburg students have measured the LeConte Glacier since 1983, and over the years have helped – and received help from -- the University of Alaska Southeast. The Wrangell program has monitored t...

  • Snow forecast uncertain for this winter

    Brian O Connor|Dec 19, 2013

While officials at the National Weather Service say they can’t predict with certainty how much snow will fall this winter, they’re pretty sure temperatures will be colder than normal. How much colder? It’s hard to say, really. “We can say with 40 percent confidence that temperatures will be lower than usual,” said Rick Fritsch, a forecaster with the Service’s Juneau office. “In climate terms, that’s pretty confident. What I haven’t said is how much colder it will be.” The average temperature for Wrangell, based only on data from between 1991 a...

  • Imagine!

    Dec 19, 2013

Christmas! What images come to your mind when you think about it? Christmas trees, mistletoe, gifts, snow, shopping, or family? Maybe you think of shepherds, an angel choir, wise men, a stable, or a pregnant mother on a donkey? We all enjoy the first list of things I mentioned. It seems that the whole world has jumped on that band wagon. How many of us really focus our attention on the second list and what Christmas is really all about? Most of the world has rejected the belief in moral absolutes or sin. “If it feels good, do it,” they say...

  • The Season of Great Differences

    Dec 19, 2013

The focus of Christmas these days seems to be the debates…whether it’s Christmas or Holidays, if X takes Christ out of Christmas, if we spend this much or that much, and what if they bring this or make that, how am I going to beat that, to travel or not, or how many parties do I go to, and…I hope I get what I want or my Christmas will be ruined. None of this even starts to include what we are bombarded with once we turn on the TV or get online. In the midst of ALL the Christmas of society, Christmas is getting lost. Christmas of Hope, Christmas...

I am thankful that I live in Alaska where there is fresh air. I appreciate the freedom we have in our country. We are not like other countries and we are lucky to live here. I am thankful that I can go to school. I have friends at school that I can play with and we...
