    Marc Lutz|Mar 16, 2022

In perhaps their toughest competition this season, the Lady Wolves high school basketball squad proved why they're the top Division 2A team in Southeast by beating both Haines and Metlakatla last week to win the regional championship, sending them to Anchorage for the state tournament this week. It was a repeat crown for the Lady Wolves, who went to state in 2019 as Southeast champions, their first time in about 25 years. The boys team didn't fare as well at the regional tournament in Ketchikan,...

Their only previous win, this season, was also against Craig High School during the Clarke Cochrane Tournament back in December. During their first game on Friday, Jan. 31, the Wolves managed to stay ahead of the Panthers by a few baskets. The final score was 57-46 in favor of Wrangell. Saturday night’s game,...

  • Busy weekend for Wolves at Clarke Cochrane tournament

    Caleb Vierkant|Jan 2, 2020

While most people take days between Christmas and New Year's as an opportunity to rest and gear up for a return to work or school, the Wrangell Wolves stayed busy by competing in the Clarke Cochrane Christmas Classic. This is a basketball tournament held in Ketchikan annually, that draws in many schools from across Alaska and from out of state. Things didn't go very well for the Wolves, Coach Cody Angerman said in a Facebook post on Sunday, Dec. 29, but it was a good learning experience for the...

  • Tough start for the Wolves' basketball season

    Caleb Vierkant|Dec 26, 2019

In the first game, Dec. 20, the Wolves managed to take the lead at the end of the first quarter with 17 points to the Vikings' 16. By the end of the first half, however, the Vikings pulled ahead at 35 to 21. They held...

    Dan Rudy|Jan 25, 2018

The Lady Wolves won a pair of games last week against Haines, during Wrangell's first home games of the 2017/18 season. The two wins put Wrangell at 4-2 so far during its regular basketball season, which had been preceded by an eighth-place showing at an interregional tournament at the Clarke Cochrane Christmas Classic in Ketchikan late last month. During January 17's midweek game the Glacier Bears had started out with a 14-9 lead after the first quarter. Wrangell's girls fought back, outscoring...

    Dan Rudy|Jan 11, 2018

The Wolves split a two-game tournament in Petersburg over the weekend during its regular season opener. They weren't the team's first games of the year, however, with the Wolves taking part in the Clarke Cochrane Christmas Classic the week prior in Ketchikan. A bit closer to home last weekend, the players were not alone in making the jaunt over to Mitkof Island as dozens of local fans and supporters joined them in the stands when play began January 5. "We had a lot of support," Wrangell coach...

  • Wrangell basketball teams take eighth in preseason tourney

    Dan Rudy|Jan 4, 2018

The girls and boys basketball teams brought back no awards but learned some lessons in a preseason tournament in Ketchikan last week. The Clarke Cochrane Christmas Classic is a longstanding Ketchikan tournament, typically held between the holidays. As with previous years, Alaska teams paired off with schools from as far afield as New Mexico ahead of their regular season openers. The Wrangell High School boys opened the tournament on December 28, matched up with Washington’s Anacortes High School. A well-regarded team in its own division at h...

After volleyball's silver-place showing at State last month and as the wrestling team wraps its own season, Wrangell High School's basketball program is already practicing for its new year. After bidding goodbye this spring to its coach of 30 years, the boys team will be headed up by a new coaching staff this season. Cody Angerman will be replacing retiring Ray Stokes as head coach, and Graham Gablehouse has been hired as assistant coach. Both men grew up in Wrangell, and are familiar faces on...

  • A look back at 2016

    Jan 5, 2017

For Wrangell, the past year was one mixed with successes and setbacks, shared tragedies and uplifting moments. Sales taxes collected over the spring and summer tour seasons neared all-time highs, with the visitor industry experiencing a good season overall. On the other end, fishermen experienced one of their worst harvests of the summer, which after a disappointing 2015 season has put the fiscal pinch on a number of local families, boat builders, and associated sectors. As 2017 dawns, concerns...

"They really did well there," explained assistant coach Jack Carney. Included in the competition were larger schools such as Glenallen, which brought along some of their former state champions for the ride. "We had some real stiff competition from Bethel," Carney noted. Dawson Miller and Dillon Rooney both competed in the 160 bracket, with senior Miller...

    Brian O Connor|Jan 2, 2014

The Wrangell girls’ basketball team racked up a single win and two losses in Ketchikan this weekend at the Clarke Cochrane Holiday Classic. “The tournament went well for a lot of my players,” said head coach Edna Abella-Nore. “For every girl except one, none of them had played at a big tournament before. There was a lot of nerves.” The tournament opened Friday with a lopsided 53-11 loss to Chugiak. The team scored a single point through two quarters then added eight more in the third, including a 3-pointer by Wrangell baller Kaydee Howell an... Full story

  • Wolves improve, but lose 3 at Cochrane tourney

    Brian O Connor|Jan 2, 2014

The Wrangell High team brought three straight losses home from the Clarke Cochrane Invitational this weekend. Wolves fans can take solace in the fact that the team has shown improvement in critical areas, even if the scoreboard lists the smaller number on the Wolves' side, said head coach Ray Stokes. Competition at the tournament also involved larger schools, Stokes added. "We lost all three of our games, but it was really pretty good competition," he said. "We're young and inexperienced, and...

"Our goal for the season: To get better every game, and hopefully come tournament time we'd like to be competitive and in the hunt for the regional tournament," he said. "We're a very young team. I don't know...
