April The Department of Transportation is finally able to get started on a major Wrangell road repaving project. Perforated by potholes, the borough’s Evergreen Avenue will be resurfaced and repaired, with pedestrian improvements and other fixes. The Wrangell Lady Wolves high school basketball team, claimed victory at the fourth annual Rally the Regions Hardwood Classic in Anchorage last week. The tournament, a round-robin style event brings together 2A schools from across the state. Laurie Brown, coach of the Lady Wolves, said that Rally the Regions is a good opportunity for teams to get a feel for who has a good chance of making it to State. After some exciting alumni games, both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams left town for Rally the Regions, a round robin style tournament for 2A teams across Alaska. The tournament is a good opportunity for everybody to size up the competition, according to Lady Wolves Coach Laurie Brown. The Lady Wolves volleyball team held its annual alumni game last Wednesday, the day after Christmas. The game brought together current team members and former players to compete in a fun three-out-of-five tournament. Age and experience triumphed over youthful energy last Thursday night, Dec. 20. The Lady Wolves high school basketball team hosted its third annual alumni game as a fundraiser and a celebration of the start of a new season. After a long and hard-fought season, the Lady Wolves came home for the last time this year. After taking second place in Regionals at Metlakatla last November, the high school volleyball team went to Anchorage last week to compete in the state championship. Jessica Whitaker started playing volleyball in the sixth grade. She fell out of the sport after graduating from Wrangell High School in 2003, she attended college in Colorado, but came back to Wrangell and got involved with the school's volleyball program again in 2005. The regional tournament in Metlakatla last week was hard-fought, according to high school volleyball coach Jessica Whitaker. The girls and boys basketball teams brought back no awards but learned some lessons in a preseason tournament in Ketchikan last week. The Clarke Cochrane Christmas Classic is a longstanding Ketchikan tournament, typically held between the holidays.
