After being rescheduled earlier in the month because of foul weather, supporters of cancer care were finally able to come together this past weekend to golf, mingle and raise funds for a good cause. Now in its tenth year, the men's and women's Rally For Cancer Care golf tournaments have raised funds for the Wrangell Medical Center (WMC) Foundation's Cancer Care Fund. The fund provides up to $1,000 per year, per applicant to help defray travel and lodging costs for individuals receiving cancer...
It isn't often that the weather gets one over on events in Wrangell, but both the ladies' and men's Rally For Cancer Care golf tournaments this past weekend have had to be rescheduled. The course at Muskeg Meadows was soaked by more than 3 1/2 inches of rain, while gale-force winds on Saturday delayed more than 40 Petersburg participants from making the trip. "This is the first time the weather's been so terrible," said Jane Bliss, director of support services at Wrangell Medical Center. "The...

The perennial Brian Gilbert Memorial Golf Tournament and accompanying auction took in $49,000 over the weekend. The tournament and awards banquet held Friday and Saturday, is the Wrangell Medical Center Foundation's largest single annual fundraiser. That amount doesn't include expenses, according to Kris Reed, who tracks the fundraiser's figures. Of money raised, 28 sponsors pledged $25,825, or more than half. While the number of sponsors was the largest number ever, their contributions missed b...
The more visible aspects of the Stikine River Birding festival start this evening, but festival elements had already started Monday. Guest artist Elizabeth Kunibe has been teaching students in Wrangell about art using bird cutouts and paints. Their work goes on display this evening in the Nolan center. Students were given wooden templates mounted on driftwood and received a lesson about color. They then painted their silhouettes and attached eyes, Kunibe said. She was putting the finishing touches on the bird templates last week when interviewe...

The tournament, which is one of Muskeg Meadows’ most popular and well-attended matches has seen immense turnout in recent years, though the 2013 version saw a slight downturn according to course manager Shannon Booker. “Tr...

A total of 27 golfers took part in the Ottesen’s True Value 4-person “best ball” tournament that began on Saturday – and saw store manager Ernie Christian’s team of himself Faye Kohrt and Eric Kading take the top spot in competition with a net 18 score on a 14-shot handicap. In 2012, thousands of square feet of the greens at Muskeg Meadows golf course were attacked by hordes of ravens – the ubiquitous local bird seeking food in the fertile soil and rich grasses of the course. At the end of last year the course seemed on the path to correcting the problem, and at the beginning of the 2013 tournament many of the areas affected by the ravens had healed and were sprouting green grass again. And then they returned, looking for grubs in the ground of the course. Last y...

The team of Robbie Robinson, Ray Pederson, Greg Scheff and Eric Kading finished Saturday with a net score of 33, while the straightest drive went to Robbie Robinson at 7-feet. Glacier Larsen took the closest to the pin honors with a distance of 23-feet, 4-inches. Course manager Shannon Booker said the tournament, which was a...

First place in the event went to the team of Greg Scheff, Ed Rilatos, Dave Doyon and Matt Jurak with a net score of 18, while Keene and Faye Koh...
The Alaska Energy Authority has approved the top of the clear-cut across from Muskeg Meadows Golf Course as a test site for a meteorological research tower and work will proceed on construction when all necessary permits are in place. The purpose of the tower is to collect wind data for potential power generation. The current plan calls for the Southeast Alaska Power Agency to enable Forest Service permitting issues, with staff from the City and Borough of Wrangell working with the AEA to cover local data collection for another Wrangell Island...
Wrangell held tightly to the 2013 Ryder Cup this past weekend as the Borough’s combined teams defeated Petersburg for victory during the annual tournament held May 18-19 at Muskeg Meadows golf course. The tournament, which followed a series of four different mini-tournaments over the course of the two-day event, featured Wrangell beating their neighbors to the north by 8-2 score on Saturday – and forced a tie-breaker on Sunday which local golfer Eric Kading broke with a shot on No. 1 bet...
A waft of heavy mist and cooler temperatures did nothing to stop Muskeg Meadows Golf Course from opening their 2013 season May 4-5 for the annual Angerman’s kickoff tournament. “We want to thank tournament sponsor, Angerman’s Inc. and Outlet Store, and everyone who joined us at Muskeg Meadows for our season kickoff golf tournament,” said course manager Shannon Booker. “Heavy mist did not deter twenty folks from competing for first place.” The competitors for Saturday’s portion of the event were Greg Scheff, Ed Rilatos, Steve Boehlert, Tymon Com...
After what seems like an eternity of wind, rain, snow and generally horrid weather all winter, the staff at Muskeg Meadows Golf Course has opened for business and is poised for the 2013 season to begin. Course manager Shannon Booker said that while the course is currently open for both rounds on the links and for use of the driving range, the kickoff of the course’s season will begin early next month. “The Angerman’s Tournament will be May 4-5 and we are expecting up to 20 participants for that...
What do you get when a senior level management official at Trident Seafoods and a former Governor of Alaska who lives in Wrangell put their combined skills, efforts and desires together? You get a brand new set of netting for the driving range at Muskeg Meadows Golf Course. The netting, which will be installed in the spring, replaces an aging net that has seen service since the opening day at the course in 2001. According to Joe Plesha, Trident’s chief legal officer in Seattle, former G...
A new mayor, renovations to the Shakes Island Tribal House and Marine Service Center, and the ongoing Wrangell Medical Center debate – all of these stories were newsmakers in 2012. Let’s take a look back at some of the biggest stories in Wrangell over the past year. JANUARY A late night blaze destroyed a trailer and sent a woman to Wrangell Medical Center with severe burns on Dec. 22. The fire, which began at 10:30 p.m. in a small pull-behind trailer near the top of the park, severely inj...
Sometimes Mother Nature cooperates with a business endeavor – and sometimes, she doesn’t at all. Such is the case at Muskeg Meadows Golf Course over the past few weeks, with rainouts and generally bad weather delaying the end of their 2012 season by at least a week. Of the two tournaments that had been planned for last weekend, the “Two clubs and a putter,” tournament was cancelled on Saturday, with the Breakaway Adventures’ end-of-the-season event rounding out the year on Sept. 9. Grover Ma...
The sun was shining just long enough on Sept. 1 for 11 members of the Muskeg Meadows Golf Club to compete individually for the 2012 course championship. Shooting a 92, with handicap of 20, club member Randy Littleton seized the championship for the 3rd annual event. Littleton’s best game shined on Nos. 6, 11 and 18 as he shot for par, and drained a pair of reasonably long putts as well. “Randy’s game improved a lot, as he hadn’t been out to practice much lately,” said course co-manage...
