A fun tradition for Wrangell’s grown-ups is returning this Saturday, with the 2021 Adult Prom. The party will start at 8 p.m. at Muskeg Meadows Golf Course. Petersburg defeated Wrangell in this year’s Ray Pederson Memorial Ryder Cup golf tournament between the neighboring communities. The Ryder Cup play used a best-ball and best-score format the first day, May 22, and a best-ball and individual-score format the second day, May 23, of the weekend tournament. The first day drew 20 golfers, with Petersburg winning 6-4. The visitors won the second day 13½ to 8½, with 16 golfers on the course. The loss of most cruise ship traffic to town will hurt Muskeg Meadows again this summer, but the golf course is open and it’s already on its third tournament of the season this weekend. Back in 2019, before the pandemic shut down cruise ship travel, a local tour operator would book golfers in advance, meet the ship and drive the visitors to Muskeg Meadows, sometimes as many as 20 a day, said Bill Messmer, who works at the course. On Sunday evening, June 7, the first positive case of COVID-19 was announced in the community of Wrangell. Last weekend was the Wrangell Medical Center Foundation's Rally for Cancer Care Tournament, held at Muskeg Meadows. The annual event draws sizable crowds from both Wrangell and Petersburg, to raise money to cover cancer patients' travel expenses. This year was no exception.
