The Lady Wolves volleyball team scored some wins at last weekend's All-Comers tournament in Juneau. Hosted by Thunder Mountain High School, Wrangell's girls were able to mix it up at the varsity and junior varsity level. On Friday Petersburg's JV beat the Lady Wolves twice, 25 to 8 and 25 to 14. Wrangell High School's Lady Wolves had a good weekend in Petersburg Oct. 16 and 17, during the 2A North Seeding Tournament. The season began for Wrangell High School’s wrestling team yesterday, as members met for their first after-school practice. “They’re training really hard,” said the team’s coach, Jeffery Rooney. Wrangell's Wolves made a good showing at the Cross-Country Invitational at Ketchikan's Ward Lake track on Saturday. Cumulatively, the high school boys team took fifth place, with 164 points. Hundreds of runners carried on through chilly rains at Saturday's Wrangell Invitational Cross-Country meet. The weather kept to around 52 degrees that day, with most of the 0.3 inches falling during the early afternoon races. Coming from 15 schools around the region, 226 runners and 20 coaches participated in the weekend meet, the third so far of the season. Deer hunting season began for Alaska residents and nonresidents in much of the Unit 3 management area last Saturday, lasting through Nov. 30. This year the Rasmuson Foundation has presented a Wrangellite with an $18,000 fellowship for literary arts. Vivian Prescott, currently of Sitka, received the award in order to conduct research and complete a poetry manuscript. “It’s about migration and living among Alaska Native peoples,” she explained. Two of Wrangell High School’s wrestlers will be traversing the equator this summer, taking their skills to Australia and New Zealand for Down Under Sports’ 27th annual tournament. JD Barratt and Ian Jenson will join 126 other United States wrestlers for the international invitational, which brings in teams of secondary-school aged wrestlers from around the world. “With two of those coming down from our community, that’s a lot,” Barratt commented.
