    Brian O Connor|Nov 7, 2013

The Lady Wolves turned in a first-place performance at the small schools tournament in Juneau Nov. 2 and 3. After a day and a half of pool play against other teams at the tournament on Friday and Saturday morning, the Wrangell High volleyball team’s record stood at 3-2, good enough to qualify them as the first seed for the middle of three tournament brackets on Saturday afternoon, working exceptionally well together to beat the varsity Ketchikan team, said coach Lisa Nikodym. “The girls just did amazingly well,” she said. “It was probabl...

  • Wolves place third in season's only home meet

    Brian O Connor|Oct 31, 2013

In the darkened gymnasium at Wrangell High Saturday evening, a large home crowd waited for wrestler Devon Miller to complete his match. The crowd didn't wait long. Only 38 seconds in, Miller pinned Chris Lerma of Kake and then walked to the center to have his arm lifted by the referee. It was the fastest pin of the finals round, and the second-fastest pin of the two-day Tom Sims Invitational tournament Oct. 25 and 26. Miller's rapid victory was one of three accomplishments by the Wolves'...

    Brian O Connor|Oct 31, 2013

Wrangell High School opened a new salad bar for lunch Oct. 23 in the student commons. The salad bar has been in the works for several months at the cafeteria after the school received a grant for the salad bar at the end of last year, and opens after last month's numbers from the food services program showed a steep decline between the number of lunches eaten this year and the number of lunches eaten at the same time last year. Most students said they enjoyed school lunches in general, even if t...

  • Lady Wolves work to improve fundamentals

    Brian O Connor|Oct 24, 2013

In two jamborees over successive weekends, the Lady Wolves demonstrated an acrobatic style at the net that makes them competitive with regional volleyball powers. That doesn’t mean it’s perfect, said head coach Jessica Whitaker. “Passing,” she said, when asked what about the Lady Wolves could stand improvement. “For the most part, they’re passing in the correct direction, it’s just nailing down the accuracy and getting the actual spot we’d like it in instead of having the setter run all over the...

    Brian O Connor|Oct 17, 2013

The Wrangell Wolves wrestling team came out of the weekend with a positive performance in Petersburg. The Wolves finished third among the school competing, and trounced much bigger schools. They finished the Petersburg tournament four points in front of Sitka and a point behind Mt. Edgecumbe. “All of the Wrangell Wolves did extremely well this past weekend in the Petersburg Invitational,” said coach Jeffrey Rooney. Sophomore Roger Miller and Junior Jeffrey Rooney Jr. led the way, collecting a p...

  • Wolves Wrestlers look to overcome turnover

    Brian O Connor|Oct 10, 2013

Like many other teams at Wrangell High School this year, the Wolves wrestlers have seen a fair amount of turnover this season. However, unlike some other teams, the wrestling team has roots in a program which extends all the way back to elementary school, and in some cases all the way back to kindergarten, said fourth-year coach Jeffrey Rooney. “I have 11 wrestlers registered, and five of them are freshman,” he said. “We have good transition from the Middle School and Peewee programs.” In addi...

    Brian O Connor|Oct 10, 2013

The Lady Wolves varsity volleyball team graduated six seniors last year, leaving something of a hole for senior leadership, coaches said. If you ask head coach Jessica Whitaker, this year’s seniors are up to the task. “We have three seniors that are playing very well,” she said. “They’ve finally blossomed.” Seniors McKenna Harding, Erica Smith and Calleigh Miller will have their work cut out for them this season, she said. Whitaker said she’d look to Smith in particular. “She shows a lot of...

Gerald can look forward to a promising career for the remaining two years of high school running, said Coach Monty Buness. “He’s only the third kid I’ve ever had who’s r...

That was good enough for second place among the small schools, and twelfth overall. Robbie Marshall finished 18:16, four seconds o...

The top Wrangell High boys’ runner placed fourth among Division III and IV runners and 12th overall at Saturday’s Wrangell Invitational. Wolf runner Bryce Gerald’s personal best of 18:12 was the high point of a race marred by a false start after several runners fell in the first 50 meters of the race. The next runner in a Wolves singlet, Robbie Marshall, placed 14th among division runners and 29th overall, with a time of 19:22. Marshall and Gerald represented the only two Wrangell runners to re...

At home to kick off the season, Wrangell won the first game on Thursday, April 25 by a 21-20 margin. Head coach Kathleen Harding said she thought the weather – which contributed to officials calling the game in the sixth inning – had an impact on the game and helped the Lady Wolves to the win. “For having mostly beginners, I think we played...

  • Rooney named Citizen of Year for 2013

    Greg Knight|Apr 25, 2013

For Jeff Rooney, Sr., a longtime employee of the Wrangell Public Works Department and head coach of the Wrangell High School Wolves wrestling team, getting up at the crack of dawn to clean our streets or work on an important project is just something he does – and has done for years – without any major recognition or awards. That changed last weekend as the Wrangell Chamber of Commerce held their annual dinner and auction at the Nolan Center. Rooney, who was nominated by a number of local res...
