    Jan 14, 2016

In the Sentinel 100, 75, 50 and 25 years ago. January 13, 1916: Alaska seems to be in the grip of one of the fiercest blizzards that has ever swept the coast. All last night and today the Stikine has howled her defiance and since daybreak the thermometer has steadily fallen. The government register at the Customs House at seven this morning was three degrees, at twelve noon it was five below and at six tonight it read ten below. Several other thermometers at different places in the city register differently but the majority are close to that...

In the Sentinel 100, 75, 50 and 25 years ago. January 6, 1916: Ase Hollenbeck and Roy Murphy arrived from the logging camp of Jimmie Green’s last Tuesday. The logging camp is situated at the head of Burnett Inlet and to get out, the men were forced to cut a channel for the gasboat through ice three inches thick, it taking them two days to get out of the inlet. They report good progress at the camp as they have a hundred thousand feet of logs in the water and two hundred thousand fell in the woods ready to be taken to the water. They will l...

December 27, 1940: About 35 shooters and a few spectators turned out Sunday for the first annual turkey shoot of the Stikine Sportsmen’s Association of Wrangell, keen rivalry making it a highly successful affair. Seven turkeys were knocked off by the sharp-eyed crackshots, the birds going to Lloyd Benjamin, Chet Steear, Chad Wyatt, Howard Messinger, Cliff Kilkenny, Lloyd Ripley and Elvin Lindsley. Some very good scores were shot. The leather medal for missing the target entirely went to President Fred H...

  • Follow His life

    Dec 24, 2015

The story of Christmas is a familiar one. Mary is visited by an angel, Jesus is born in a barn, a feeding trough used as a crib, wise men visiting, and shepherds proclaiming. This birth is celebrated around the world even after 2000 years have passed. Many at the time however, missed it. You can see why… born to a seemingly insignificant couple, no room for them in the inn, the family forced to become fugitives for the first few years of Jesus’ life, this event slipped past many. But scripture tells us this was No Ordinary Birth. What the world...

  • Put Christ first

    Dec 24, 2015

“Seek first his Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33, NIV June and I lived for six years on the Micronesian island of Pohnpei, a lovely tropical Pacific island 200 miles above the equator. The Pohnpeian word for Christmas is Christmas, a word the local people had adopted into their language from the English when they converted from their animistic religion to Christianity. The word Christmas originally meant Christ’s Mass. That is, the mass that was celebrated in honor of Chris...

  • Celebrate Christmas

    Dec 24, 2015

Another Christmas is here along with the lights, shoppers and all the other festive activities. A festive Christmas seems to create false expectations that are impossible fill. Somebody will get sick, another cannot come home or that one of a kind special gift is nowhere to be found. All this to satisfy what has become a meaningless ritual that is placed on our VISA card. The original purpose of Christmas is lost to Santa, Rudolph or some other fictitious tale. Please, don’t take me wrong, my family continues to enjoy each of these festive t...
