The Alaska School Activities Association had announced the cancellation of the 2020 State Basketball and Cheer Championships. The purpose of the postponement and mandate is to reduce the possibility for spreading Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). ASAA agrees with the State of Alaska’s assessment that our best course of action in dealing with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), is to slow down the statewide spreading of the virus. With one loss, two wins, and one forfeit, the Wrangell Lady Wolves ended their season at Regionals this past week. The Lady Wolves went into Regionals with a second place seed, after a strong performance all season. Coach Laurie Brown said she was proud of how her team did in Regionals, and all year long. The Wrangell Wolves basketball team has returned from regionals in Juneau, another season completed. Much like their season this year, regionals saw both wins and hard-fought losses for the team. While they did not reach the championship or runner-up spot, Coach Cody Angerman said he was very proud of his team’s performance. Wrangell hosted the Stikine Hoops Invitational last week, March 5 to 7. The tournament brought together AAU teams from several Southeast communities, including Sitka, Petersburg, and Juneau. "A" and "B" teams from each community competed through several days of games to get seeded in the final day's bracket. The Wrangell Swim Club has had a busy start to 2020, competing in two tournaments in Anchorage and Ketchikan in January and February. Four club members swam in the Alaska Senior Championship, in Anchorage, near the end of January. Coach Jamie Roberts said that this is the highest level competition in Alaska for swimmers between the ages of 13 to the mid-20s. The Wrangell Lady Wolves held their annual homecoming games last weekend, playing against the high school's rivals, the Petersburg Lady Vikings. Middle schoolers from Wrangell spent the latter part of last week in Juneau, taking part in the Southeast Alaska Middle School wrestling championships. As a team, they came in fifth place with a total of 180 points. They were just behind Petersburg, in fourth place. It has been a difficult season for the Wolves, who have faced tough opponents and several hard-fought losses.
