After a long and hard-fought season, the Lady Wolves came home for the last time this year. After taking second place in Regionals at Metlakatla last November, the high school volleyball team went to Anchorage last week to compete in the state championship. The regional tournament in Metlakatla last week was hard-fought, according to high school volleyball coach Jessica Whitaker. The Wrangell Lady Wolves played against teams from Skagway, Petersburg, Metlakatla, Klawock, and Craig. The Wrangell Wolves, the high school wrestling team, competed at the ACS Denali Auto Glass Invitational tournament in Anchorage last weekend. There were 55 teams present for the tournament. Assistant Coach Jack Carney said that the ACS tournament is one of the largest for 3A schools in the state. The Wrangell Swim Club went to November Rain last weekend, an annual swim meet held in Petersburg. This is the third year Wrangell has competed in the event, according to Coach Jamie Roberts. Roberts brought 17 swimmers to Petersburg. Each swimmer in the meet, she explained, could participate in a maximum of 12 swims. Her swimmers competed in a total of 138 swims. Renee Roberts, a freshman at Wrangell High School, set a new personal best time at the ASAA swim and dive state championship last weekend. The tournament took place in Anchorage, where 289 swimmers from 29 different schools competed, according to Swim Team Coach Jamie Roberts. The Wrangell High School wrestling team has begun training for another season. The team’s first tournament will be in Petersburg on Oct. 12 and 13. Coach Jessica Whitaker said that she decided to take her team beyond Southeast Alaska this year to play against teams they otherwise wouldn’t have as much contact with.
