Wrangell’s high school wrestlers took 10th overall at the Anchorage Christian Schools Tournament over the weekend. Wrangell High School played host to the South Seeding Volleyball Tournament last weekend, with six teams competing for the last time before Region V. At 26.2 miles, running a marathon can hardly be called an easy feat – as the story goes, the runner of the very first, Pheidippides, supposedly dropped dead from exhaustion after completing his marathon over 2,500 years ago. Running seven of them in as many days, and in as many states, can be considered a real challenge. A slightly smaller group of Wrangell High School wrestlers competed at the Bill Weiss Invitational in Ketchikan last weekend. Wrangell High School’s wrestlers took third place last weekend during the Brandon Pilot Invitational Tournament at the Thunder Mountain High School campus in Juneau. “The guys did very well, I’m very proud of them,” said the Wolves’ coach, Jeff Rooney. The Lady Wolves volleyball team scored some wins at last weekend's All-Comers tournament in Juneau. Hosted by Thunder Mountain High School, Wrangell's girls were able to mix it up at the varsity and junior varsity level. On Friday Petersburg's JV beat the Lady Wolves twice, 25 to 8 and 25 to 14. Wrangell High School's Lady Wolves had a good weekend in Petersburg Oct. 16 and 17, during the 2A North Seeding Tournament. The high school cross-country team wrapped up its season over the weekend, with the girls coming in 11th place overall at the State Championships in Anchorage and senior Bryce Gerald coming in eighth place in the boys race. “I’m so happy with how the season went. A good turnout was had at the "Crazy Big Swim" meet, jointly held by the Wrangell Swim Club and Wrangell Island Masters Swimming. Of 36 swimmers registered to attend, 32 were able to make it to Saturday's meet at the pool. Masters coach Bruce McQueen said the meet was the first involving both the adult and children's groups since Swim Club was rebooted in 2012. The season began for Wrangell High School’s wrestling team yesterday, as members met for their first after-school practice. “They’re training really hard,” said the team’s coach, Jeffery Rooney. While Wrangell High School’s cross-country program prepares for its final meets, other sports are just starting up for the new school year. Wrestling begins next week, and on Sept. 16 volleyball players began practicing for the season ahead. Wrangell's Wolves made a good showing at the Cross-Country Invitational at Ketchikan's Ward Lake track on Saturday. Cumulatively, the high school boys team took fifth place, with 164 points. Hundreds of runners carried on through chilly rains at Saturday's Wrangell Invitational Cross-Country meet. The weather kept to around 52 degrees that day, with most of the 0.3 inches falling during the early afternoon races.
