At 26.2 miles, running a marathon can hardly be called an easy feat – as the story goes, the runner of the very first, Pheidippides, supposedly dropped dead from exhaustion after completing his marathon over 2,500 years ago. Running seven of them in as many days, and in as many states, can be considered a real challenge. Local runner Dale McMurren recently completed such a feat last month, after participating in the Mainly Marathons Appalachian Series circuit. "I had no idea if I could do it," h...
A slightly smaller group of Wrangell High School wrestlers competed at the Bill Weiss Invitational in Ketchikan last weekend. The team was down to nine wrestlers last week after several injuries and withdrawals. “They did good,” said the Wolves’ coach, Jeff Rooney. “Of course we want to do a little bit better,” he added, as the season nears its midpoint. Wrangell placed seventh overall in the two-day tournament, with 88 team points. The Ketchikan High School hosts took first place in the tourney with 216 points, followed by Craig with 149,...
Wrangell High School’s wrestlers took third place last weekend during the Brandon Pilot Invitational Tournament at the Thunder Mountain High School campus in Juneau. “The guys did very well, I’m very proud of them,” said the Wolves’ coach, Jeff Rooney. In the 120-pound class, Orion Heller took second place with two for three wins. He was pinned in the final round by Ketchikan’s S...
The Lady Wolves volleyball team scored some wins at last weekend's All-Comers tournament in Juneau. Hosted by Thunder Mountain High School, Wrangell's girls were able to mix it up at the varsity and junior varsity level. On Friday Petersburg's JV beat the Lady Wolves twice, 25 to 8 and 25 to 14. The Lady Vikings' varsity team would also sweep Wrangell's the next evening. Recently added to 2A, Petersburg has been the team to beat this year. "They did pretty well," said Wrangell coach Jessica Whit...

The team's volleyball players racked up four wins out of six games in the best-of-five tournament. "It was a really good trip," said the girls' coach, Jessica Whittaker. "I was really proud of them." Last weekend was a successful one for Wrangell High School's wrestling program, hosting the first tournament of the season without a hitch and taking second place among 14 schools. "The community turned out in full support," said activities director Lisa Nikodym. The Tom Sims Invitational Tournament is named for Tom Sims, a former graduate, coach and longtime participant of Wrangell's wrestling program. As coach during the late 1980s and 1990s, Sims' team secured several championships, and he...
The high school cross-country team wrapped up its season over the weekend, with the girls coming in 11th place overall at the State Championships in Anchorage and senior Bryce Gerald coming in eighth place in the boys race. “I’m so happy with how the season went. I’m sad it’s over,” reflected coach Jenn Davies. Gerald bested his time from last year’s championship, when he also came in eighth. This year he finished in 17 minutes 16 seconds, better than 17:22 last year, then his personal be...
A good turnout was had at the "Crazy Big Swim" meet, jointly held by the Wrangell Swim Club and Wrangell Island Masters Swimming. Of 36 swimmers registered to attend, 32 were able to make it to Saturday's meet at the pool. Masters coach Bruce McQueen said the meet was the first involving both the adult and children's groups since Swim Club was rebooted in 2012. Swimmers spanning eight decades pooled together for the swim, which is a virtual meet associated with non-profit Swim Across America....
The season began for Wrangell High School’s wrestling team yesterday, as members met for their first after-school practice. “They’re training really hard,” said the team’s coach, Jeffery Rooney. Coach Steve Miller will be assisting him again this year, which Rooney expects will be good for the team. Last year Wrangell took the Region V title, and took seventh overall at the state-level tournament in Anchorage. Several students placed in the top two or three spots for their weight class, and 12 of the Wolves’ 15-strong roster this year are retur...
While Wrangell High School’s cross-country program prepares for its final meets, other sports are just starting up for the new school year. Wrestling begins next week, and on Sept. 16 volleyball players began practicing for the season ahead. Nineteen girls have signed up for the team so far, and the team is currently holding six practices a week before its first games begin. “We have strong seniors this year,” commented Jessica Whitaker, Wrangell’s coach for the past decade. Five new freshmen will be joining the varsity and junior varsity...

The dugouts will remain empty this spring for Wrangell High School, with both the baseball and softball seasons cancelled due to a lack of participation. “We gave it a good run but we called it quits,” explained school activities director Jack Carney. Sign-ups for boys baseball and girls softball began last month, and the period had been extended by two weeks in an effort to get more students to join. “The coaches worked hard to garner interest,” Carney commented. “It's kind of a bummer.” The softball team was not able to fill a roster, nee...
