The Wrangell Wolves wrestling team came out of the weekend with a positive performance in Petersburg. The Wolves finished third among the school competing, and trounced much bigger schools. They finished the Petersburg tournament four points in front of Sitka and a point behind Mt. Edgecumbe. “All of the Wrangell Wolves did extremely well this past weekend in the Petersburg Invitational,” said coach Jeffrey Rooney. Sophomore Roger Miller and Junior Jeffrey Rooney Jr. led the way, collecting a p...
Like many other teams at Wrangell High School this year, the Wolves wrestlers have seen a fair amount of turnover this season. However, unlike some other teams, the wrestling team has roots in a program which extends all the way back to elementary school, and in some cases all the way back to kindergarten, said fourth-year coach Jeffrey Rooney. “I have 11 wrestlers registered, and five of them are freshman,” he said. “We have good transition from the Middle School and Peewee programs.” In addi...
The Lady Wolves varsity volleyball team graduated six seniors last year, leaving something of a hole for senior leadership, coaches said. If you ask head coach Jessica Whitaker, this year’s seniors are up to the task. “We have three seniors that are playing very well,” she said. “They’ve finally blossomed.” Seniors McKenna Harding, Erica Smith and Calleigh Miller will have their work cut out for them this season, she said. Whitaker said she’d look to Smith in particular. “She shows a lot of...
The Wrangell High School boys’ cross country team finished out the season in Anchorage with performances at or near their personal bests. Sophomore Bryce Gerald led the pack for Wrangell at 17:53, eight seconds off his personal best at Juneau in mid-September. That was good enough for 27th among the small-schools runners. Gerald can look forward to a promising career for the remaining two years of high school running, said Coach Monty Buness. “He’s only the third kid I’ve ever had who’s r...
The Wrangell High School Boys cross-country team is headed to state after winning the small schools division at the Region V Championships meet Saturday in Sitka. The team scored 105 points for third place overall, led at 17:50 by sophomore Bryce Gerold, who won the small schools race and placed third overall. Behind him, senior Robbie Marshall delivered a respectable 18:15 for fifth among small schools and eighth overall. Freshman Darren Shilts clocked 19:39 to round out the top three...
Runners recorded nine personal bests at the Juneau Cross-country meet Saturday. “It was a really great meet for us,” said coach Monty Buness. “I think in 20 plus years of coaching I’ve never seen that (many personal bests).” Bryce Gerald again led the pack across the line and dropped his time to 17:45, down 27 seconds from the previous meet in Wrangell Sept. 15. That was good enough for second place among the small schools, and twelfth overall. Robbie Marshall finished 18:16, four seconds o...
The top Wrangell High boys’ runner placed fourth among Division III and IV runners and 12th overall at Saturday’s Wrangell Invitational. Wolf runner Bryce Gerald’s personal best of 18:12 was the high point of a race marred by a false start after several runners fell in the first 50 meters of the race. The next runner in a Wolves singlet, Robbie Marshall, placed 14th among division runners and 29th overall, with a time of 19:22. Marshall and Gerald represented the only two Wrangell runners to re...
The Sitka All-Stars baseball team’s District II championship came last week in Wrangell, though their tough play against other teams from Southeast could not be matched against the stellar District I champs, “Abbott-O-Rabbit” out of Anchorage in the State Championship, where Anchorage won the best-of-three competition. Anchorage, who maintained a post-season scoring record of 109-2 against the All-Star teams in their division, had to play a little more defense as Sitka scored 8 points over...
The team from Sitka saw lightning strike as they took the Region II crown on Sunday afternoon by defeating reigning champ Juneau by a score of 5-1 in six innings. Sitka’s scoring run started off in the top of the second inning with Morgan Simic giving an RBI single to give the go-ahead to Jasoren McGraw for 1-0 lead. The score remained 1-0 through the top of the fourth when Kyler Sumauang scored on an RBI single from Aaron Dumag – with two outs against Sitka. Another single by Bryce Kelly to sco...
The final showdown of play at the 2013 Region II All-Stars Little League tournament in Wrangell culminated on Thursday night as the home team took on – and came close to beating – perennial rival Petersburg. For two innings the Wrangell team either led or were tied with their competition from the north, though the team stayed in until the very end, losing only by a 3-1 score in the sixth inning. Petersburg scored first on a stolen base by Stone Morgan. Dillon Rooney scored the first and onl...
Youth baseball came to Wrangell in a big way last weekend as the 2013 All-Stars tournament for Southeast Alaska kicked off at the diamonds near the Nature Trail. The competition featured teams from Wrangell, Petersburg, Ketchikan, Sitka, Prince of Wales Island and Juneau. Coach Glenn Smith said hosting the tournament in Wrangell was good for the nearly 100 players, visiting families, and the local community. “One of the things I like about the tournament being here in Wrangell is that it g...

The Lady Wolves hosted the Petersburg Lady Vikings softball team for one last pair of games for the 2013 season – and saw their neighbors to the north walk away with two victories, each in the double digits. The first inning of Sunday’s double-header against Petersburg started out with the Lady Vikings holding an 8-4 lead – and saw a pair of runs from Sarah Tate. Each team only scored two runs apiece in the second inning, with Ruby Brock and Raven Hansen scoring for Petersburg, and Darian Meiss...
The Wrangell Medical Center Foundation held their 6th Annual Brian Gilbert Memorial Golf Tournament last weekend at Muskeg Meadows – under better weather than previous tournaments – and saw a total of 60 players come out over the two-day event. On Friday afternoon, a round of casual golf was played, with a 9-hole best-ball scramble as the format. First place in the event went to the team of Greg Scheff, Ed Rilatos, Dave Doyon and Matt Jurak with a net score of 18, while Keene and Faye Koh...

The Lady Wolves and Petersburg’s Lady Vikings club team split a pair of games last week as Wrangell played their first matches of the 2013 softball season. At home to kick off the season, Wrangell won the first game on Thursday, April 25 by a 21-20 margin. Head coach Kathleen Harding said she thought the weather – which contributed to officials calling the game in the sixth inning – had an impact on the game and helped the Lady Wolves to the win. “For having mostly beginners, I think we played...
The Lady Wolves softball team has hit the diamond at the city fields – and are beginning work toward their 2013 season with a pair of seniors leading the way and head coach Kathleen Harding at the helm once again. In 2012 the squad finished last season with a convincing 20-7 win over the Craig Lady Panthers at home, but only after overcoming a 26-38 loss in the two-game opener. It was during the win that Wrangell’s McKenna Harding and Alyssa Allen had back-to-back homers. Allen, and fellow senio...
After what seems like an eternity of wind, rain, snow and generally horrid weather all winter, the staff at Muskeg Meadows Golf Course has opened for business and is poised for the 2013 season to begin. Course manager Shannon Booker said that while the course is currently open for both rounds on the links and for use of the driving range, the kickoff of the course’s season will begin early next month. “The Angerman’s Tournament will be May 4-5 and we are expecting up to 20 participants for that...
