A dozen candidates have filed for eight openings on the borough assembly, school board and port commission, with contested races in the two of the elections.
Incumbent Assembly Members Brittani Robbins and Phillip Mach have filed for a one-year term to fill out the final year of Anne Morrison’s three-year term. Morrison moved out of state earlier this year; the assembly appointed Mach to serve until the October election.
Robbins is in the last year of a three-year term.
Competing with Robbins and Mach for the one-year term on the assembly is David Wilson, whose third term on the school board ends in October.
Wilson also filed for reelection to the school board, where he currently serves as board president.
Robbins also is running to serve both on the assembly and school board.
The one-year assembly term will go to the top vote-getter in the Oct. 7 municipal election.
The filing deadline for candidates was Friday, Aug. 29.
Dan Powers and assembly incumbent David Powell have filed for the two three-year assembly terms that will be on the ballot. Unless someone files as a write-in candidate, Powell and Powers will be uncontested in the election.
Powell is in his 10th year on the seven-member assembly; Powers was elected last year to the five-member school board, where he is serving a three-year term.
The race for two three-year terms on the school board is heavily contested, with incumbents Wilson and Elizabeth Roundtree seeking reelection and joined on the ballot by Robbins, who is trying to get back on the board after losing her reelection bid last year.
The three school board veterans will be joined on the ballot by Bonnie Ritchie.
The top two vote-getters of the four candidates will win the school board seats.
Three incumbents on the five-member port commission are running unopposed. John Yeager and Winston Davies filed for three-year seats, with Antonio Silva going for the one-year seat.
Yeager is in his 15th year on the commission. Davies is at the end of his first three-year term. Silva was appointed in February to fill an unexpired term after commissioner Gary Morrison moved out of Wrangell; the election is to fill the last year of that term.
There are no bond issues or propositions on the ballot.
The polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, at the Nolan Center.
Registered voters can cast their ballots early starting on Sept. 22. Early, or absentee voting, will be available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays at City Hall, Sept. 22 through Oct. 6.
Anyone who cannot vote in person on election day or during the two-week early voting period at City Hall can stop by borough offices to pick up a form for an absentee ballot.
