BACK-TO-SCHOOL backpacks for tribal youth who signed up with Tlingit and Haida can be picked up 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, at the Nolan Center. For more information, call 907-874-4304.

 

TEA and HISTORY of ST. PHILIP’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH 2 to 4 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 14, at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church Parish Hall. Step back in time, enjoy tea and browse collections of old photographs from the life and community of St. Philip’s. If you have old photographs of St. Philip’s, bring them along to share.

 

MUSKEG MEADOWS TOURNAMENTS, WMC Foundation Rally for Cancer Care golf tournament, with prizes, silent auction and games, on Saturday, Aug. 16. Tournament play starts at 10 a.m.; registration starts at 9 a.m. Cost is $35 for golf and lunch; $20 for lunch (non-golfers). Register online at wmccancercare.com. KSTK-sponsored AP&T Golf Tournament, nine-hole best-ball and putting contest, is Sunday, Aug. 17. Tournament play starts at 10 a.m., register by 9:30 a.m.

 

BACK-TO-SCHOOL SKATE PARTIES 10:30 a.m. to noon for kindergarten and 1:30 to 3 p.m. for first grade, Monday, Aug. 18. Second grade is 10:30 a.m. to noon and third grade is 1:30 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19. Fourth grade 10:30 a.m. to noon and fifth grade 1:30 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20. Free. Hosted by TouchPoint Alaska Ministries at the roller rink on Bennett Street. 

 

SCHOOL BOARD MEETING 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18, in Evergreen Elementary School, Room 101. The public can email comments to kpowell@wpsd.us, or can sign up under guests to be heard at the meeting by emailing the same address before 3:30 p.m. April 14.

 

MUSIC IN THE PARKS 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Shoemaker Park. Live music by The Powers and special guests. The police department will be grilling burgers and hot dogs. Bring a side dish to share; bring a chair and dress for the weather. Park at Shoemaker Harbor. Leave your dogs at home. Sponsored by Parks and Recreation. 

 

“A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN” movie at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, at the Nolan Center. The 1992 family-friendly comedy about the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in 1943 is free; presented by Island of Faith Lutheran Church as part of its retro-movie program. The concession stand will be open.

 

LOCAL AUTHOR VISIT 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at the Irene Ingle Public Library. Join Linnea K. Warren to discuss writing, publishing and her debut young-adult novel, “Debt of Wolves.”

 

COMMUNITY POTLUCK 6 p.m. Fridays through August at the sheltered site on Nemo Point Road. All are welcome.

 

SKATER TOTS 10:30 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and Thursdays at the TouchPoint Ministries rink on Bennett Street. Children 0-10 years old. Scooters, flat board, skates for novice beginning skaters, separate play area, toys and tumbling mats for infants. Parents/guardians must stay to supervise. Free.

 

ROLL ON THE ROCK roller skating 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturdays at the TouchPoint Ministries rink on Bennett Street. Children 9 and under must be accompanied by an adult. $5 per person.

 

AA MEETINGS: North Star Group meets from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays, St. Philip’s Episcopal Church.
