Wrangell voters will get to choose among candidates for eight seats on the borough assembly, school board and port commission when they go to the polls in the Oct. 7 municipal election.
Candidates for those seats have until Aug. 29 to file their paperwork at City Hall.
The filing period opened on Friday, Aug. 1.
Declaration of candidacy forms are available at the borough clerk’s office from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.
The Oct. 7 ballot will include two, three-year terms on the assembly, with the seats going to the top two vote-getters if more than two candidates file for office.
The three-year terms of Assembly Members David Powell and Brittani Robbins expire this year. Robbins has served one term on the assembly. while Powell is finishing up his 10th year on the assembly.
Powell said last week he is undecided whether he will run for another term; Robbins said she will seek reelection.
Robbins also said she intends to run this fall for a seat on the school board, where she served for three years until losing her reelection bid in 2024. She also has announced her candidacy for the Alaska Legislature in the 2026 state general election, looking to take the seat currently held by Sitka Sen. Bert Stedman.
Robbins said she would resign from any elected municipal office if she wins a seat in the Legislature.
Voters in the October municipal election also will choose a candidate to fill the last year of a three-year assembly term. The seat is currently held by Phillip Mach, who was appointed earlier this year to serve until the October election after Anne Morrison resigned her seat and retired out of town.
“I am currently planning on running for reelection,” Mach said last week.
The school board terms of Dave Wilson and Elizabeth Roundtree expire this fall; both are three-year seats.
Roundtree said last week she hadn’t yet decided whether to seek reelection. She is finishing her first three-year term.
The Sentinel was unable to reach Wilson for comment. He is in his third term on the school board.
The port commission seats held by Winston Davies, John Yeager and Antonio Silva expire this fall and will be on the ballot.
Silva was appointed in February to fill an unexpired term after commissioner Gary Morrison moved out of Wrangell. Silva said last week he will seek reelection for the remaining year of the three-year term.
Davies said he plans to seek reelection to a three-year term; he is finishing his first term.
Yeager, who is finishing his 15th year on the commission, said he will run for another term to continue working on several port and harbors projects.
Candidates for borough office are required to collect at least 10 signatures for their declaration form.
Candidates for the assembly must be a registered voter, at least 18 years old, and must have lived in town for at least one year.
School board candidates must be at least 18 years old and a registered voter.
Port commissioners must be at least 21 years old and have lived in Wrangell for at least one year.
