At least one candidate has filed for every seat that will be on the Oct. 6 municipal election ballot, though just two of the five races had more than one candidate as of early Monday afternoon, Aug. 24.
The filing period will close at 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31.
As of Aug. 24, Mayor Patty Gilbert is unopposed in her bid for another two-year term.
Mechel Lynn Meek is the only candidate to have filed for the three-year port commission term, and Port Commissioner Donald “DJ” McConachie Jr. is the only person to have filed for the two-year term that will be on the ballot.
The race for the one school board seat on the ballot is contested, with three candidates: School Board Member John DeRuyter, who is going for a second term, and Franki Gablehouse and Jayme Howell. The top vote-getter in the Oct. 6 election will win a three-year term.
There also are three candidates for borough assembly as of Aug. 24, with three-year terms going to the top two vote-getters.
John Yeager filed for reelection to the assembly. S.R. “Reme” Privett III and LaDonna Botsford also have filed for the assembly.
Candidates for mayor, borough assembly, port commission and school board need to fill out a declaration of candidacy, available at City Hall, and return it with the signatures of 10 registered Wrangell voters.
Candidates must be a registered voter and have lived in town at least one year. Candidates for mayor, assembly and school board must be at least 18 years old. Port commissioners must be at least 21 years old.
