It’s almost summer — time for annual swimming pool maintenance

Just as summer is a good time for outdoor recreation, it’s also the best time for annual maintenance of Wrangell’s indoor recreation facilities.

Starting Monday, May 25, the community pool will close for repairs and maintenance. It could reopen July 13 if workers don’t run into any unanticipated problems or other delays, according to Parks and Recreation.

The weight rooms, cardio equipment, sauna and locker rooms will be open during the first couple of weeks of the pool closure, but the entire operation will close June 6-14 for their share of annual maintenance, cleaning and other work projects, announced Lucy Robinson, Parks and Recreation director.

The community center’s facilities “also will transition into our seasonal operating hours (on May 25), which will include an earlier daily closure time,” Robinson reported. “Updated schedules and hours will be posted to our website, and our social media platform.”

This summer’s busy work list includes “draining the pool to complete deep cleaning and repairs to the pool basin, along with pool mechanical system repair and replacement projects,” she said.

“We currently anticipate reopening the pool on Monday, July 13, pending the progress and completion of repairs and maintenance work.”

Planned work at the pool deck and basin includes an acid wash of the deck, a deep clean of the gutters, tile repair and grout work, and painting.

A new chlorination cell will be installed, the heat exchanger replaced and the heating and ventilation unit in the basement repaired, Robinson said.

The Parks and Rec crew were ready to install a new chlorination cell during last summer’s shutdown but held off for one more year, she said.

“The heat exchanger was on the list but we did not get that done last year,” moving it to this summer’s work schedule.

Maintenance in the locker rooms will include tile repair and grouting, plus some plumbing work, locker repairs and painting, she said.

Weight rooms and cardio equipment will be repaired, along with deep cleaning and painting updates in those areas.

“Historically, attendance tends to slow during the spring and summer months as community members enjoy the longer, warmer days,” Robinson said, “which is why we typically schedule these larger projects during this time of year.”
