KSTK turns up the live music for Aug. 9 fundraiser

Get out those Hawaiian shirts, flip-flops and straw hats for an evening of tropical fun and music. Just because all the hubbub around the Fourth of July and Bearfest is a wrap doesn’t mean summer fun is over.

KSTK radio will host a Beach Blowout fundraiser Aug. 9 at the Nolan Center.

There will be a beach-themed backdrop for photos, games and a variety of snacks and sodas included in the $20 ticket. Beer, donated by the Alaska Brewing Co., and wine will be available for purchase.

Music will be provided by Dara Rilatos and the Planktonics, which describe themselves as “five ocean-enjoying friends based in Juneau, with a shared love of groovy tunes.”

Rilatos, originally from Wrangell, is the soulful lead for the band, which has a funky, jazzy, New Orleans sound, according to their Instagram account, complete with trombone.

Anna Angerman, KSTK’s development director, said the band’s commitment to the vital role of public radio led them to donate their concert fee, and sponsors are covering their travel and lodging.

Angerman said fundraising events have always been a big part of the radio station’s revenue, and are especially critical after the president and Congress clawed back federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, cutting KSTK’s federal funding in about half.

“Fundraising has always been a big portion of our revenue, a significant portion of our local budget. We depend on the supporters of public radio,” Angerman said.

The Beach Blowout is a new event, shifting a party-style fundraiser from fall to summer. she explained, “We felt like the community calendar was super busy in the fall, so instead of our Halloween fundraiser, we shifted to a summer event. I hope we can make this event successful enough to make a contribution to the fundraising goal for the year.”

In addition to the Beach Blowout, KSTK is sponsoring a 50/50 raffle, and the winning ticket will be drawn at the Aug. 9 event. Tickets are $5, and you do not have to be present to win. Call the station at 907-874-2345 or stop by the station to purchase tickets.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. Aug. 9 and the music starts at 7 p.m. Those under 21 can attend if accompanied by a legal guardian. Tickets are available at the station or at the door.
