The high school volleyball team played its only home games of the regular season, winning two matches on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 9-10, both against Skagway. Wrangell and Petersburg went neck and neck in their two matches, with Petersburg winning both, as well as its matches against Skagway.
On Friday, Wrangell won its first match against Skagway 3-0. Skagway scored 17, 13, and 12 in the three sets, falling short of Wrangell’s winning scores of 25 points in each set.
Sophomore Alyssia Roundtree was Wrangell’s top hitter. Senior and captain Alana Harrison had five kills and one block.
On Saturday, the sets were much closer, but the Lady Wolves still won the match. Skagway scored 22, 22, and 20 in the sets, falling short of Wrangell’s 25. Freshman Lily Stearns was the top hitter of the match. Sophomore Clara Carney had five aces and a solo block during the match.
The Lady Wolves lost two very close matches with Petersburg, both ending with a score of 3-2 in the five-set matches. On Friday, Petersburg won the first two sets, each by a score of 25-23. Wrangell won the next two sets, 26-24 and 25-20.
It came down to a tie-breaker. Petersburg won the final set, scoring 15-8.
Once again Stearns was the top performer for the Lady Wolves when it came to hitting. Harrison was also a top performer for her team, with six kills and five total blocks.
Petersburg scored 26-24 in the first set of the team’s second match on Saturday. Wrangell outscored the Vikings in the next two sets, coming in at 25-22 and 25-15. Petersburg won the last two sets of the match, 25-16 and 15-3.
Not only was senior Alexis Easterly Wrangell’s top hitter of the match, but she also had nine kills, the most for the Lady Wolves. Junior Breann Boon had 17 assists. Captain Harrison had four blocks for the match.
Petersburg defeated Skagway in straight sets on both days.
Because these were the only home games of the season, Friday was the Lady Wolves Volleyball Senior Night, celebrating seniors Harrison, Easterly and Sophia Martinsen.
The senior players expressed gratitude to their coaches: head coach Shelly Powers and assistant coaches Brian Herman and Lynsie Morelli. “We have so much potential on our team, I think it’s going to be great. I’m sad it’s my last year, but it’ll be a good one to end on,” Harrison told the Sentinel.
“I think we had a good start to our season. We have already learned a lot. I’m really grateful for my teammates, and I’m excited to see how much more we can grow as a team.” said Martinsen.
The team’s next games will be Oct. 23-24, when Wrangell and Petersburg will travel to Haines for a round of matches.
