The Lady Wolves basketball team is looking strong this season, starting off by demolishing the Haines Glacier Bears at Wrangell’s home-opener weekend.
They won by a whopping 26 points the first night, Friday, Jan. 9, coming out just as strong and winning by 37 on Saturday. Their defense was especially notable, as Friday night they did not allow Haines to score a basket until the last quarter of the game.
The first points of Friday’s game were earned by Alana Harrison with a fast break, her first two of eight points that night. Shailyn Nelson, Hailey Cook and Christina Johnson also got on the board, earning Wrangell a 23-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.
At the start of the second quarter, coach Christy Good took out most of the starters and put in a few of the younger girls on the team. She said this was in hopes of “getting them prepared mentally … so they know what to expect at the varsity level.”
Johnson, a senior and team captain, drained a three-pointer to earn three of Wrangell’s four points that quarter, the other being a free throw by Kaiya Brevik.
Highlights of the third quarter were a big steal and fast break by Brevik, as well as a deep three by Jenna Eastaugh. Heading into the fourth quarter, Wrangell had tallied 36 points while holding the Glacier Bears to 0.
Alexis Easterly scored her final two points of the night before Haines’ CC Elliot earned the visiting team’s first basket with five and a half minutes left on the clock. Elliot ended up scoring 10 of the Glacier Bears’ 16 points.
Wrangell came out on top with a 42-16 victory.
Saturday night the Lady Wolves laid off their full court press from the previous night, though that did not calm their aggressive play. With steal after steal and jump ball after jump ball, neither team lacked effort.
Harrison earned six of the Wolves first points, while Easterly and Cook also helped build a 14-2 lead in the first quarter.
Eastaugh had a great second quarter, having three fast breaks in a row to earn her six points for the night.
The score was 25-7 at the half — Harrison with nine, Eastaugh with six, Cook with five, Johnson with three, and Easterly with two.
Easterly and Cook were on the same page in the third quarter, from feeding each other the ball in the paint, to getting each other’s rebounds. They had a combined 15 points in the third. The only other points earned by the Wolves were a layup from Brevik.
With some final points from Harrison, Easterly, and freshman AJ Roundtree, the Lady Wolves secured their second win of the season with a 50-13 victory on Saturday.
The team plays against the visiting Petersburg squad in Wrangell’s homecoming weekend Friday and Saturday, Jan. 16-17.
