The Lady Wolves traveled to Craig and lost twice to the Lady Panthers last weekend, 49-32 on Friday, Feb. 20, and 47-33 on Saturday, Feb. 21.
The games were Wrangell’s second-to-last matchups for the regular season before the Southeast regional tournament March 5-7 in Juneau, leaving only this coming Friday and Saturday’s games against the Petersburg Vikings to finalize rankings for the tournament bracket.
The Lady Wolves enter this weekend 6-6 in conference play.
On Friday, the Lady Wolves came out tough against the Lady Panthers with a full-court press and earned the first two points of the matchup with a bucket from Shailyn Nelson. Craig too brought the intensity, however, and with their own full-court press and a couple of three-pointers and layups, the visitors staked a 10-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Wrangell scored nine more points before halftime — two three-pointers from Hailey Cook and another from Christina Johnson.
Craig was ahead 21-14 at halftime in what seemed like a close matchup with both teams fighting for rebounds and getting steal after steal.
Another three-point shot from Johnson and four points each from Alana Harrison and AJ Roundtree helped Wrangell rack up some points. However, Craig’s Sara Steffen and Ashlyn Smith couldn’t be stopped, each scoring at least 10 of the Panthers 31 points by the end of the third quarter.
The Wolves earned seven more points in the final quarter, with three from Cook and two from both Harrison and Roundtree. But it was not enough, with Criag taking the win 49-32.
Wrangell’s 32 points that night included nine from Cook, seven from Harrison, six each from Johnson and Roundtree, and two from Nelson and Jenna Eastaugh.
The following evening Wrangell took a loss by a similar margin, 47-33.
It was a very low-scoring first quarter on Saturday, with Craig ahead 4-2. Wrangell’s two points came from Christina Johnson.
Scoring picked up in the second quarter, with five from Johnson, as well as two each from Harrison and Roundtree. Like the night before, Lady Panther Sara Strong led the visitors with 14 points in the second quarter, the only other points coming from Ashlyn Smith.
After halftime, Craig continued to score before Cook retaliated with a three-pointer as well as a coast-to-coast fast break to earn some points for the Wolves.
Craig was ahead 32-19 heading into the final quarter, and Wrangell kept pushing until the very end. Cook added seven more points, as well as a three-point shot from Johnson and a layup from both Roundtree and Nelson.
But Craig’s strong defense intercepted a lot of Wrangell’s passes, stifling any attempts at a comeback before the game ended 47-33 for the visitors.
