Lady Wolves win against Angoon at Hoonah tournament

Wrangell faced three out-of-conference competitors this past weekend at the Icy Strait Tournament in Hoonah. The Angoon Eagles, Shaktoolik Wolverines and Hoonah Braves all went head-to-head against the Wolves on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 12-13, and despite all three teams being from smaller schools, two out of three succeeded against Wrangell.

The first tournament game produced a 53-10 victory for the Lady Wolves against the Angoon Eagles. It seemed like a bit of a warmup game for Wrangell in hopes of getting their feet under them and running some plays in the unfamiliar gym.

The first half was strong for the Wolves, with nine points from Alana Harrison, the same from Alexis Easterly, six from both Christina Johnson and Hailey Cook, and five from Jenna Eastaugh.

The Wolves built up a 35-8 halftime lead, holding the Eagles to just two points in the second half.

The Eagles had a tough time against Wrangell, with simple mistakes like travels and double dribbles. Additionally, their weak defense gave Wrangell the opportunity to score easy layups and build an insurmountable lead.

The Wolves were confident after gaining their first win of the tournament. However, that would be their only victory of the games.

The next morning, the Shaktoolik Wolverines faced off against the Lady Wolves, with ups and downs for both teams at the start.

Wrangell kept the Wolverines from scoring until the final minute of the first quarter and were leading going into the second, however the 3-2 zone they were running in defense ended up not being very efficient as Shaktoolik started knocking down three-pointers.

It was much of the same in the second half, but what really led the Wolverines to victory over the Wolves was their energy. Shaktoolik scored on several fast breaks and beat Wrangell to the rim for rebounds. The Lady Wolves lost 32-47.

Wrangell’s final matchup took place Friday night against the Hoonah Braves.

The Lady Wolves brought the intensity early with a full-court press and steals, but the Braves kept up the pace. Both the first and second quarters ended with one-point advantages: It was Wrangell ahead 16-15 at the end of the first, and Hoonah up 23-22 at the end of the second quarter.

The Braves ended up winning after some on-and-off rebounding from the Wolves and more overall energy by the Braves. The victory margin was 58-39.

Wrangell’s 39 points came from 12 by Harrison, nine from Cook, five from Johnson, five from Easterly, four from Eastaugh and the same from Shailyn Nelson.

The Wrangell Lady Wolves will head to Craig to play the Lady Panthers on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 20-21. The following week, both the Wrangell boys and girls teams will play in Petersburg, with the Southeast regional tournament in Juneau on March 4-7.
