Levi Sewall Dow III passed away on June 26, 2026.

A celebration of life will be held at 4 p.m. Aug. 29 at the Nolan Center.

Levi was born July 12, 1951, in Bangor, Maine, to Levi Sewall Dow Jr. and Dorothy Dow. He was surrounded with love from numerous family members and friends in his final days.

Levi’s family moved to Wrangell in 1961 when his parents took teaching positions at the Wrangell Institute. Levi attended Wrangell schools and graduated from high school in 1969. He attended Alaska Methodist University in Anchorage on a basketball scholarship and graduated with a degree in physical education.

Levi enjoyed fishing, hunting and the great Alaska outdoors, but his true passion was playing basketball. He was well known in Southeast Alaska for playing basketball during high school and while attending college. His teams won numerous trophies and tournaments.

He is best known for playing for Hoonah in the Gold Medal Basketball tournaments in Juneau. His legacy in basketball continues to inspire future generations in Hoonah and throughout Alaska.

Levi worked in the fishing industry the majority of his life. He started in high school working at Harbor Seafoods in Wrangell in the cannery and finished his career as the plant manager.

In his later years, he worked at Ottesen’s Ace Hardware, where he enjoyed interacting with people coming in for supplies. “Honestly, he mostly enjoyed the daily coffee breaks and bs-ing with the guys about all the good old times,” his family wrote. Levi had a unique sense of humor that allowed him to develop numerous longtime friendships.

He always looked forward to his annual fishing and hunting trip to Virginia Lake with longtime friends.

Levi is survived by his wife Kathy; sons Levi IV and Toby; stepson Jim Early; siblings Dorothy and husband Jim, Nancy and husband Ruedi, Jim and wife Kathy; grandchildren Davis, Anna, Jacob, Austin, Katelyn and Jamie; nephews Scott, Sean, Michael, Alec, Charley and Alex.

In lieu of flowers, the Dow family requests that donations be sent to WMC Foundation, Box 2175, Wrangell, AK 99929.
