Library brews up a tea party fundraiser with an artistic creation

High fashion and high tea will make for a high time at the library.

The Friends of the Library is hosting a tea party fundraiser Sunday, April 26, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Irene Ingle Public Library.

“Tea parties are becoming a lost social art,” said Kaitlin Wilson, library assistant.

“It is an excuse to dress up and be fancy, as well as branching out to other fundraising activities beyond our Alaska Airlines ticket raffle,” said Sarah Scambler, library director.

To contribute to the finery on Sunday, the library is hosting a free “make you own fascinator” event on Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Fascinators are ornamented hair bands or clips, often seen at British weddings, Easter parades and the Kentucky Derby. They are a playful alternative to a hat for formal occasions.

The timing of the fundraiser is meant to generally correspond with the running of the Kentucky Derby on May 2.

“Fascinators are just fun and fancy and different,” said Scambler. They can be both a conversation piece and an opportunity for fundraising.

The fascinator Princess Beatrice of Great Britain wore to the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in 2011 was initially described as a pretzel, but later sold at a charity auction for $130,000.

Materials to create a one-of-a-kind fascinator will be provided by the library, including bands, clips, feathers, tulle (netting), ribbons and jewels. Participants are welcome to bring their own supplies as well.

Attending the fascinator-creation event does not obligate anyone to attend the fundraiser the next day. And neither event is ladies-only. Men can create a construction paper top hat, or add feathers or other bling to their own fedoras, dress hats or favorite caps.

“It could be a fun date, or a mother-daughter outing,” said Scambler.

The Sunday tea party tickets are $25 ahead of time at the library and $30 on event day at the door. The library will be outfitted with a variety of tables and seating arrangements for conversation groups. There will be tea, of course, but coffee and punch will also be available.

A variety of posh nibbles, including cucumber sandwiches and petit fours will be served.

Fascinators will be on parade, and prizes will be awarded for most fascinating, most creative and most regal.

All proceeds from the fundraiser will support library development projects.
