New leaders emerge after fourth weekend of fishing derby

It was a good weekend for entries in the Wrangell fishing derby, which started June 7 and closes Sept. 7.

Bristol Wagner, of Cherry Valley, California, was in first place for the largest halibut as of Sunday evening with a 133.6-pound catch on June 26.

Wrangell’s Diana Nore-Ellison was in first for king salmon with a 27.9-pound catch that she reeled in on June 27.

Close to 100 derby tickets have been sold, reported Lora Lee Mason, executive director of the chamber of commerce, which sponsors the annual derby.

Jeff Murtaugh held down second and third places in the halibut derby after the fourth weekend of fishing with his catches of 111.2 pounds and 61.7 pounds, according to the chamber’s leaderboard on Sunday evening.

Roman Jaques, of Spring Creek, Nevada, was in second place in the king salmon derby with a catch of 22.3 pounds. Nicholas Mitchell was in third, at 21.2 pounds.

It’s still early for the coho, but that didn’t stop Nore-Ellison from taking the lead in the coho derby with a 6.7-pound entry.

Derby tickets, at $35 each, are available at Sentry Hardware, the Stikine Inn, Alaska Vistas, Angerman’s, TK’s Mini Mart and the chamber office in the Nolan Center.

The largest king, coho and halibut turned in over the three-month derby each will earn the angler a $1,000 cash prize.

There also will be special “hidden weight” weekends for coho and halibut on Sunday, July 5, Aug. 8-9 (during Bearfest) and Labor Day weekend Sept. 5-7.

The chamber is offering $300 cash prizes on those three special weekends for the coho salmon and halibut that come closest to a secret weight set by a computer program, rather than for the largest catches.

The chamber hopes the chance that every fish could be a winner will drive more interest in the derby.

The weekday weigh-in station for derby entries is at Peninsula Seafoods at the Marine Service Center.

Boaters who bring in catches evenings and weekends can go to a weigh-in station at Reliance Harbor, across from the harbormaster’s office, or call ahead to arrange a weigh-in at 907-874-3901, 907-305-0552 or 907-305-0553.
