One-day class offered to help new and existing businesses

Spruce Root, a regional nonprofit that provides help for Southeast businesses, is coming to Wrangell to present a one-day class that it’s calling Business Basics.

“It’s really for folks who are looking to expand or start a business,” said Haley Armstrong, program manager for financial wellness. The class will help business owners and business hopefuls better understand “who you are appealing to, who is your target audience.”

The class is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Nolan Center. The fee is $25, but waivers are available if the cost is a barrier. Email grow@spruceroot.org, Armstrong said.

The deadline to register is Nov. 10. Go to spruceroot.org, click on events and select the Wrangell workshop to sign up online.

Spruce Root was in town Oct. 13 with a financial wellness workshop, as it moves around Southeast to provide business and personal financial classes.

The Juneau-based nonprofit was established in 2012 with a $500,000 grant from Sealaska Corp. Though it is chartered as a Native Community Development Financial Institution, its financing, business coaching and financial wellness programs are available to everyone in Southeast.

The Nov. 15 business class in Wrangell is offered in partnership with the chamber of commerce and the Nolan Center.

“This workshop will guide you through key concepts of business planning, budgeting and operations, which will provide you the tools to build a sustainable business in Southeast Alaska.”

The class, which will be led by Ashley Snooks and Chloey Cavanaugh, of Spruce Root, will help people evaluate their business plan, connect with other business owners, and develop financial projections, Armstrong said.

The class is about a lot more than just retail, she said. “We have a lot of artists who come to our workshops,” and tour operators, too.

There is no set limit to the class size, she said. Attendees are advised to bring their laptop to class.

Help can continue after the class, she said. Spruce Root offers free one-on-one coaching through its client services program. “It’s really tailored to each individual.”

Several business loan programs also are available.
