Pick a meeting to attend, any of three meetings

For Wrangell, the proverb “good things come in threes” rings true this holiday month — three meetings on the same night.

It’s probably not what most people think about 10 days before Christmas, but attending a public meeting would be a gift to yourself and the community.

The borough assembly has scheduled a presentation and question-and-answer session to start at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15, at the Nolan Center to lay out plans for a new floating dock on the downtown waterfront to accommodate the 170-passenger ships of American Cruise Lines.

The company, which parks its ships for overnight stays, approached the borough this past spring, looking for a long-term lease or contract on a new dock. Cruise line and borough officials have been talking for several months about financing, lease terms and operations, with City Hall looking to share the details at the Dec. 15 meeting.

That same evening, also at the Nolan Center, Tidal Network, the wireless internet provider owned by the Central Council of the Tlingit & Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska, will hold when they are calling a “listening session” from 6 to 8 p.m.

Tidal Network has federal funding to install telecommunications towers around Southeast to help improve service in areas of weak coverage. But it has run into opposition in some communities, including Wrangell. Not everyone likes the idea of a tower in their neighborhood.

The Wrangell planning and zoning commission last month rejected the application for a tower at about 13-Mile, and community members have spoken against towers in Petersburg, Haines and Sitka. The Wrangell listening session is one of seven scheduled around Southeast this month.

And not to be forgotten among the two special meetings that night, the school board’s regular monthly meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. Dec. 15 at Evergreen Elementary School.

For parents and other community members with questions about the schools, or who follow school district policies and practices, Evergreen is the place to be Dec. 15.

For people who want to learn more about telecommunications towers, who want to voice their support or opposition, or just want to listen and form an opinion later, the Tidal Network session at the Nolan Center is your meeting.

And for people who want to better understand the proposal for a new dock, who will build and manage it and the lease terms, come to the Nolan Center at 7:30 p.m. that evening.

All of the meetings are worthy of public participation. Pick one, spend an hour or two learning, and then go back to your holiday plans.
