A mixture of Spirit Days and a Reverse Beauty Pageant fundraiser will give fans a variety of chances to show support during this weekend’s Wrangell Wolves home basketball games against Petersburg.

The high school cheerleaders have chosen themes for each home game this season, encouraging supporters to come to the gym decked out in whatever best fits the theme.

For the Friday, Jan. 16, game, spectators can haul out their letter jackets and high school sweatshirts for Vintage Wrangell Night.

Then on Saturday, Jan. 17, it’s Red and White Night, a show of the school colors.

It’s homecoming weekend at the high school.

As a new fundraising event, the Class of 2029 is sponsoring a Reverse Beauty Pageant. Sophomore AJ Roundtree said she was inspired by seeing old photos of her dad participating in one when he was in high school and thought it would be funny to recreate the idea.

Heather Armstrong, the school district’s activities adviser, said it is less about upending traditional beauty standards than “a chance to dress in fun and silly ways.”

The contest is free and open to all high school students, who will walk the red carpet between the Friday night junior varsity and varsity games, Armstrong said.

“It’s open to both boys and girls, who can wear everything from Halloween costumes to dress-up.”

“They will be dressed reverse the usual beauty standards,” according to Class of 2029 social media advertising for the event.

Supporters will vote for their favorites by purchasing tickets for $1 each and then putting their tickets into a designated jar for each contestant. Voting will continue through 5 p.m. Saturday, when the winner and two runners-up will be announced in between games.

A variety of prizes for the winners, as well as door prizes for people who purchase tickets, are in the works, Armstrong said,

“We know for sure the pageant winner will receive a sash and a crown.”
