This year’s first tax-free shopping day in Wrangell is Saturday, May 3. Continuing a yearslong tradition, the borough assembly has approved a second tax-free day, accepting the chamber of commerce request for Oct. 6.
The assembly vote on April 22 was unanimous.
“These events have historically stimulated the local economy by encouraging increased consumer spending and supporting Wrangell's small businesses,” Borough Finance Director Jackson Pool reported to the assembly.
“By temporarily removing the barrier of sales tax, these days help drive retail activity, promote local shopping and strengthen the financial health of the business community.”
The first tax-free day next year will be May 2, under the resolution approved by the assembly.
“The timing of the events — one during the shoulder season (October) and one ahead of summer (May) — further supports year-round economic activity,” Pool wrote.
Assembly Member Powell asked Pool how much revenue the borough loses by not collecting sales tax on purchases for one day. The finance director said he did not have a precise number but noted that the shopping event is among the biggest days of the year for local merchants.
Borough Manager Mason Villarma later estimated the revenue loss at between $20,000 and $30,000 for each tax-free day.
Sales tax is the largest source of revenue to the borough’s operating budget.
