Harold Conine passed away on July 23, 2025. He died in his home, at his request.
Harold was born June 6, 1939, in Olympia, Washington. He moved to Wrangell in 1970.
Harold was an accomplished diesel mechanic by trade, and for many years helped to keep the fishing and logging industry thriving in the community he so loved. Later, when his knees didn't permit him to make boat calls anymore, he fixed whatever fit through the shop door, even if he had to enlarge the door to accommodate a friend's large four-wheeler. He fixed chainsaws, motorcycles, vacuum cleaners, sewing machines and whatever didn't work to help a friend.
His first project in wood was to build what he called his "little cabin in the woods" even if it is on the highway. It took him nearly 10 years to complete it, as he did it largely by himself. He only had others do the mudding and taping and carpet laying. "He was immensely proud of that accomplishment," his family wrote.
Harold felt blessed to use his skills to help his friends and neighbors in any way he could. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Harold is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughter Tammy (Larry) Cooper, of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; son Bruce (Rhonda) Connie, of Sitka; daughter Heather Feller of Auburn, Washinton; stepson Duane (Angie) Davis, of Seattle; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
There will be no service, at his instruction. Anyone wishing to honor him in some way may donate to the Wrangell Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 794, Wrangell, AK 99929. "We are indebted to them at the end of Harold's life," the family wrote.
