Volunteers needed to sell pizza for wrestling fundraiser July 3-4

Tony Anzalone loves wrestling and Wrangell and wants to sell his homemade pizzas to raise money for the wrestling team, but he needs some help.

Anzalone owns a pizzeria in Boise, Idaho, which is highly rated on Google, and for the past two years he has called Wrangell home, where he currently works as the school district’s technology department director.

“I absolutely have fallen in love with Wrangell,” he said. “This is the best community I have ever lived in. I just want to give back and be an active part of it.”

Anzalone explained that he started working as assistant wrestling coach for the middle school last year, and he plans to sell pizzas at the downtown pavilion Thursday and Friday, July 3 and 4, to raise money for the wrestling program.

“I don’t have a specific idea for where the money could go to,” he noted. “I’ll leave that decision up to the head coach Jack Carney. I just want to help.”

Anzalone will be using his three favorite home pizza ovens on-site and plans to sell 12-inch pizzas from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. both days but plans to only have volunteers work for three hours at a time.

“I don’t know how many people have worked in a pizzeria before, but it can be very tiring,” Anzalone remarked. “I’ll be working the 12 hours, but I don’t expect anyone else to do that.”

Anzalone said he needs a total of 18 volunteers to help, but had lined up just five as of Monday, June 30.

“Right now we have five volunteers not including myself,” he said. “The 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. shift has been covered on both days and now we just need to cover the shifts 1 to 4 p.m., 4 to 7 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m. on both days.”

He will be selling four different pizzas: Cheese, pepperoni, sausage, or a combination of the three ingredients. The cost will be $20 per pizza.

“I don’t know how much we’ll sell, but I’m going to make more dough balls than will probably be necessary,” he noted. “But maybe we’ll get lucky and sell enough pizzas to where we’ll use all of the dough.”

Anzalone said he wanted to give a special acknowledgment to The Wolf Shack.

“I spoke with them to see if they could help me order the pepperoni and sausage, and they just outright gave those ingredients to me,” he said. “They definitely didn’t have to do that. I really appreciate the gesture.”

Though he has never organized a fundraiser before, Anzalone said he has a good feeling about this one.

“Hopefully, everything will go well,” he remarked. “I think this is a community that wants to support its wrestling team.”
