Two of the few remaining tourists on the island reboarded the Fridtjof Nansen — the last ship of the 2025 season — as a cold rain fell on Sept. 22. The Norway-based 490-passenger Hurtigruten Expeditions left Wrangell for Vancouver, British Columbia, in preparation for its next cruise to Chile, Patagonia, Antarctica and Argentina. An estimated 40,000 cruise passengers were expected in Wrangell this summer. The Wrangell Convention and Visitor Bureau’s 2026 calendar shows more than 72,000 passengers next year, if all of the ships run at full capacity.
