Obituary: Lillith Bauman Yancey, 93

Lillith (Lil) Bauman Yancey, 93, a long-time resident of Wrangell was called to be with the Lord on Oct. 5, 2011 in the comfort of her own home.

Born in 1918 in Ladysmith, Wis., Lil graduated from the Minnesota Bible College and took music classes at the Chicago Conservatory of Music. She taught music for several years, during which time she met and married Lyle Yancey in 1953. In 1960, a son, Eric Lyle Yancey was born.

Lil’s family moved quite a bit, mostly around Montana, Wyoming and Idaho wherever their logging lifestyle would take them. After Eric graduated high school in 1978, they made their move to Wrangell. Lil could be found in the bakery at Benjamin’s Grocery Store until her retirement, while Lyle did some commercial fishing in his own retirement years.

Lil was well known and loved for sharing her musical talents with the Wrangell Bible Baptist Church congregation.

Lil will be remembered for her wonderful jams, jellies and banana bread that she would generously share with friends and sell at bazaars around Wrangell. Her kind heart, gentle spirit, and positive nature will live on in all those that had the privilege of knowing her.

Her son, Eric Yancey, grandchildren Dwight, and Trista, and a great-grandchild Ruby June survive her.

Memorial donations may be made to the Wrangell Senior Center, where Lil spent wonderful times during her retirement years.

A graveside service was held on Oct. 9 at Sunset Cemetery. A celebration of life at the Wrangell Bible Baptist Church followed.
