The Wrangell Wolves wrestling team continued their winning ways last weekend in Ketchikan as two of Wrangell’s finest battled their way to the top of their brackets at the Bill Weiss Invitational tournament at Kayhi.
The two wrestlers, juniors Kurt Dingwall and Tanner Thomassen, started high in their respective 138- and 145-pounder classes and were able to overcome four opponents each to take a 1st place finish for Wrangell.
Wrangell’s head wrestling coach, Jeff Rooney, said each of his winning athletes performed at the top of their game in Ketchikan.
“Kurt anchored the No. 2 seed in his bracket under the returning 4A region champion,” Rooney said. “He wrestled extremely well and brought us four victories before landing the 1st place finish for the tournament. Tanner anchored the No. 1 spot in his bracket and it was a much deserved position due to his past matches.”
Thomassen took his win on a fall over Mt. Edgecumbe’s Franklin Hoogendorn while Dingwall defeated Craig’s Josh Kerstein in a decision victory.
Sophomore Devon Miller and junior Lorenzo Silva nailed down the No. 2 spots in their brackets, while junior Steven Barger took 3rd place on a decisive pin in the consolation bracket of the 182-pound group.
Austin Stevens, a junior, took 5th place, with fellow classmates Jacob Marshall and Jordan Veele landing in 6th place.
“All of the Wolves did extremely well this past weekend,” Rooney added. “Each and every one of the boys has been working very hard and improving on aspects, styles and intensity.”
The next meet for Wrangell will be this weekend at Thunder Mountain High School in Juneau.
