Traditional Tlingit drum making

Richard Oliver, left and Isaiah Shepler, string deerskin heads onto their traditional drums during a class at the SNO Building last week. According to Tlingit Elder Virginia Oliver, another drum making class will be held at the end of the year during Christmas vacation. Master carver Wayne Price, who has been heading up the Shakes Island renovation project, came by for the first class and sang a traditional song for the drum makers. Wrangellite Thomas Rooney, Jr. also came by for the second class with the drum he made at the first class to sing and drum for the drum makers.
