Rep. Peggy Wilson announces for Dist. 33 seat

Representative Peggy Wilson announced this week that she would run for the new District 33 seat in the Alaska House of Representatives.

The district was formed after the 2010 census caused realignment of districts across the state. The new District 33 seat will cover Wrangell, northeastern Prince of Wales Island, Hyder, Ketchikan and Saxman.

If elected, Wilson would serve for her seventh term in the legislature. She currently serves in a leadership position as the House Majority Whip.

According to a press release by Wilson on November 28, Wilson said she “brings years of seniority that ensures experienced leadership and a voice listened to in Juneau.”

Wilson is also the first woman to be elected to a House of Representatives seat in more than one state. Before holding her position in Alaska, she was elected to three terms in the North Carolina legislature from 1988-1993.

“I feel there is still work to be done planning for Alaska’s future,” Wilson said. “Not only for District 33, but also for the state as a whole. Oil will not always be the biggest revenue source for the state and we need to diversify our revenue stream in order for our state to survive the economic uncertainty of the coming years.”

Wilson currently holds the 2nd District seat in the House.
