Wolves Junior Varsity takes one from Craig

The Wolves of Wrangell High School hosted the Craig Panthers on Dec. 16-17 in the home opener for WHS.

Things got off to a bumpy start for the Wrangell Wolves varsity team on Friday night as they came within one point of winning their first game in front of the home crowd. Although it was close throughout the game, Craig was able to pull out the 58-57 win in the 4th quarter.

Exceptional offense in the Friday game came courtesy of Clayton Stokes with 28 points. Clayton Rhodes added 9 points, while Travis Bangs followed with 8 points of his own. Nathan Ashton put up 6 points, with Devon Miller adding 4 points and Mike Simpson going in for the deuce.

Saturday night wasn’t any better for the boys’ team either, as they dropped the matchup 70-62 – even with a double technical foul on Craig’s Malik Almenzor.

Stokes was once again on fire for the Wolves with 31 points, 15 of which came in the third period alone. Bangs put up double digits as well with a 16-point contribution, while Rhodes added 9 points to the boards. Jake Murphy followed with 4 points and Ashton put a pair in from the line to add 2 points for Wrangell.

The boys’ JV team, however, managed to pull out the solitary win on Saturday night for any of the Wolves’ teams with a 64-49 stomping of the Panthers.

Miller led the game with 14 points, while Jacob Marshall and Jake Murphy adding 13 points apiece in the win. 11 points came in from junior Kurt Dingwall, while Mikey Otteson put up 5 points.

Wrangell’s boys’ JV team lost their Friday night matchup 59-38.

The next games for the varsity teams will be Dec. 27-29 in Ketchikan.
