Lady Wolves win one lose one against Haines

The Lady Wolves came away with a win over the weekend after facing the Lady Glacier Bears of Haines on home court.

Haines defeated Wrangell Friday 61-44, but the following night the Lady Wolves beat the Lady Glacier Bears by ten points. The game score was 48-38.

The Lady Wolves looked like they were off to a good start at the beginning of the game Friday, with junior MiKayla Stokes sinking two, three-pointers in the first quarter.

However, Wrangell committed nearly 30 personal fouls total as a team the first night it faced Haines, which allowed the opponent to add 21 points to the scoreboard due to free throws. Those 21 points amounted to nearly a third of Haines total points for the game.

Haines also scored 25 points in the third quarter of Friday’s game, including three, three-pointers.

Among the Lady Wolves, junior Alyssa Allen was Wrangell’s high scorer of Friday’s game, scoring 12 points for her team. Senior Loni Buness scored 11 points for the Lady Wolves.

The following night, however, Haines’ high number of personal fouls allowed Wrangell 28 shots at the free-throw line, the Lady Wolves sank 18 of them.

Wrangell coach Dave Silva said his team stepped up their game Saturday and changed its defense, which contributed to the win.

“Our press was pretty darn good against them,” Silva said.

He also said his players were shooting better Saturday than the previous night, and all-around played a better game of basketball.

“We played pretty well,” Silva said. “We played the way we wanted to play.”

Silva said he was proud of the performances from freshman Darian Meissner, sophomore Erica Smith and junior Shayna Schultz who stepped up when two Lady Wolves fouled out of the game.

“They did great, they just held their own,” Silva said.

This weekend, Wrangell faces Mt. Edgecumbe at home. Silva said he would be working on improving the team’s offensive skills, including fine-tuning plays and ball handling, during practices this week to prepare for the game.
