Lady Wolves defeat Lady Vikings on home court

The Lady Wolves won its two Homecoming games this weekend against Petersburg.

The games were close, with Wrangell winning by one point Friday night. On Saturday, the Lady Wolves took the game by a six-point lead. Coach Dave Silva said his players kept the intensity up and the pressure on their Petersburg opponents, which helped lead the Lady Wolves to victory.

Silva also said he felt his guards were stronger than Petersburg’s, and that helped the Lady Wolves defensively. Petersburg senior Carolyn Kvernvik was the Lady Vikings’ high scorer.

“When she got the ball under the basket, you couldn’t stop her,” Silva said.

However, by playing tough defense on Petersburg’s guards, Silva said that successfully kept them from passing to Kvernvik and prevented her from scoring as much.

Silva also changed up the defensive strategy for Wrangell’s senior Loni Buness, who personally covered Kvernvik. Buness was able to get in front of the Petersburg senior Saturday night and block passes to her.

“She was really able to defend her from getting the basketball,” Silva said.

Buness was also the Lady Wolves’ high scorer both Friday and Saturday night. She scored 15 points for Wrangell in the first game against Petersburg and scored 16 points the following night.

Silva acknowledged Buness’s accomplishments of the weekend.

“If she’s moving, and continues to move, then a lot of good things happen,” he said.

Both nights saw a high number of fouls on both teams, however. That comes with a fast-paced game, Silva said.

“Your adrenaline is going really hard, you’re taking a lot of chances and you’re going to make a lot of fouls,” he said. “We just felt that was the route we had to go.”

Wrangell’s junior varsity girls’ basketball team won to Petersburg Friday night, but lost Saturday.

The Lady Wolves leave today to travel to Sitka for two games this weekend. Silva is expecting a tough weekend, as Sitka is at the top of the conference.

The Lady Wolves’ overall record is now 9 wins and 10 losses, and the team has a conference record of 4-6. The home games against Petersburg this past weekend do not count toward Wrangell’s conference record. The teams faced each other earlier in the season, and those two wins did count toward the Lady Wolves’ conference record.
