Wolves loses to Petersburg

The Wrangell Wolves lost by one point Friday night on home court to the Petersburg Vikings. The following night, however, Petersburg gained a larger lead and took the game 70-52.

The games on Wrangell court were the team’s first home games in over a month. Saturday night was also the Wolves Homecoming game. Though the games were fast-paced and the teams kept the level of intensity high, the Wolves could not keep up with the Vikings.

Coach Dave Stokes said though his team fought hard over the weekend, the Wolves struggled offensively against Petersburg. Friday night’s loss by one point was a disappointment. The Wolves led the game at the end of the third quarter 35-31, but the Vikings successfully shot four baskets and sunk eight free throws in the fourth quarter and took the lead. Even a fourth-quarter three-pointer by Wrangell senior Clayton Rhodes could not help the Wolves take the game. The score ended 47-46.

Stokes said his players need to be more patient on the court and take better shots at the basket. He said he would be working with his team this week at practice on those offensive skills.

“I can’t fault their effort,” he said. “I think they’re giving an effort, and hopefully we can make some adjustments and have some patience and produce better offensively.”

The Wolves have the weekend off from games, and Stokes said the break would hopefully prove beneficial for the players. The break will come before a four-game streak next week. The team hosts Sitka Feb. 15 and 16 and Juneau 17 and 18.
