Patrick W. Lloyd, 94

Patrick W. Lloyd, 94, died February 3, 2012 in his sleep, in Anacortes, Wash.  Mr. Lloyd was born on September 7, 1917, at Arthur Yates Memorial Hospital in Ketchikan, Alaska. He was the eldest son of Frank Lloyd, Alaska fisherman and salmon cannery man, and Jennie Heath Lloyd, daughter of Eugene Arthur Heath, early Alaska homesteader, land developer and newspaper publisher.

Mr. Lloyd grew up in Ketchikan and graduated from Ketchikan High School. He attended the University of Washington for two years. He was employed in the family salmon business, Eagle Trap Company, until the breakout of World War II when he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard.  During the war he served as Petty Officer in Charge of Coast Guard patrol boats in the Alaska Sector, Thirteenth Naval District.

After the war, Mr. Lloyd married his wife of 66 years, Irene Mae Seger, of Seattle, Wash., and returned with his bride to Ketchikan. He again worked for the family business and remained in the salmon fisheries until 1952. In 1953 he accepted employment at Ketchikan Pulp Company. He retired from KPC in 1980. Mr.  Lloyd and Irene then moved to their home on Guemes Island where they resided for 27 years before moving to Anacortes in 2007.

Mr. Lloyd is a Past Grand President of the Pioneers of Alaska and a member of the United Flying Octegenarians. He holds an Extra Class Amateur Radio license, call sign KL7HGO.

Mr. Lloyd received flying lessons after his military service and was licensed as a Private Pilot in 1950. He was qualified to fly single engine airplanes on wheels or floats.

Mr. Lloyd was an avid reader, fisherman, loved poetry and boating, and had a vast knowledge of early Alaska history in the SE Panhandle.

Mr. Lloyd was preceded in death by his brother, David Lee “Mike” Lloyd and his grandson, Travis Heath Berkey.

Mr. Lloyd is survived by his wife Irene; children Frank Patrick Lloyd (Jane Frances Lloyd), Farrel Lloyd Lewis (Harley E. Lewis, Jr.) and Jody Ann Lloyd (Grant Ritter). Their grandchildren are: Chrissy Lloyd, Beth Ketah, Adam Wayne Berkey and Gavin Lee Berkey.
