Lady Wolves suffer losses

Wrangell High School girls’ varsity basketball team had a tough weekend traveling to Sitka for two games while half the players fought off a head cold.

The Lady Wolves lost the games against the Sitka Lady Wolves. Friday night’s game ended 46-24 and Saturday night’s game ended 59-19.

Sitka is a very good basketball team, said Wrangell Coach Dave Silva, who also has been battling a cold since last week. Sitka plays tough defense and matches the Lady Wolves speed on the court, he went on to say.

Though the losses were “painful,” the weekend games were also a learning experience, he said.

“Sometimes you get a chance to play one of the best teams in the state, and that’s what we did,” Silva said.

His players were not feeling their best throughout the weekend, and the trip to Sitka was hard on the team. After returning home Monday night, Silva said the team would be hitting the court Tuesday for practice, and after his players recovered from their colds, increasing intensity at practice throughout the week.

“We need to have good practices,” Silva said.

Wrangell hosts Juneau this weekend. The games will be the last the Lady Wolves will play on home court this season.

This year’s regional tournament takes place in Ketchikan March 1-4. Silva said the team would be fine-tuning its skills to prepare for Regionals.
