Local logo designs sought for bird fest

This year marks the 15th anniversary of the Stikine River Bird Festival, which is scheduled for the last full week of April. The Wrangell Convention and Visitor Bureau is seeking local artwork for a festival logo.

The bird fest does not have a logo of its own, said Joel Delabrue who works with the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) in Wrangell, and is involved with the planning for the bird fest.

The logo contest will hopefully get more people interested in the bird festival, Delabrue said. The logo could also be used in the making of t-shirts, pins and other festival souvenirs, he said.

The logo contest is free to enter. A logo must have the words “Stikine River Bird Festival” included and be original artwork, according to the contest rules. It can include five colors, but should look good in black and white as well.

A photo contest is also scheduled for this year’s bird fest. Delabrue said details for the photo contest have not been finalized, but encourages people to get out and start taking photos of birds before the festival.

Ketchikan artist Sandy Shepard will be this year’s bird fest featured artist, and will be in town teaching classes at Wrangell’s schools starting April 23.

An exhibition of Shepard’s work will be on display at the Nolan Center between April 26 and 28.

Jet boat tours up the Stikine River will run during those three days, giving birdwatchers an opportunity to view the many shorebirds, including snow geese and sandhill cranes that gather at the Stikine River Delta.

The delta attracts thousands of bald eagles every year, creating the largest springtime concentration in the U.S. Numerous species of gulls also gather in the area.

The fest will feature free bird presentations and workshops throughout the weekend.
